Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Boise, ID - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, fought until the very end in a five-game series versus the Idaho Steelheads, but could not crinkle the crease as Netminder Steve Silverthorn led the home squad to a 2-0 win, and tilt the season series in their favour.

The first period remained a scoreless tie until an Idaho powerplay with eight minutes left lit the lamp. The Steelheads passed the puck along the blueline and set up a shot from the point by Darrell Hay, and the screened Julien Ellis missed the reach as it slipped inside the left post for an Idaho 1-0 lead.

Idaho capitalized on another powerplay advantage in the second period. Taggart Desmet sprinted into the Victoria zone along the wing and took a right handed shot from the centre of the left circle. Ellis made the initial save but Desmet popped in the rebound from beside the left post for his sixth goal of the season and the Steelheads 2-0 cushion into the final period.

The Salmon Kings created opportunities in the third period, but were denied by Goaltender Steve Silverthorn, who earned his fourth shutout of the season.

Final: 2-0 Steelheads

Silverthorn snagged his 21st win of the season, and Ellis keeps and even record with his 11th loss. Victoria was 0 for 7 in the powerplay and Idaho scored twice in seven chances with the man advantage. It was a back and forth third period as the shots evened up, but Idaho held the advantage 36-34. The Salmon Kings (20-29-0-1) return home for a three-game series versus the Stockton Thunder (21-13-4-5) starting on Valentine's Day (Wednesday Feb 14) at 7:05 p.m.
