Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Mike Scott had a goal and two assists as Alaska took a 3-0 lead and rolled to its 10th straight win at home, 5-2 over Phoenix, in front of 5,424 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
Facing the Roadrunners for the first time this season, and in the first of six games between the two clubs in the next 11 days, the Aces grabbed a 1-0 edge on the first flurry by either club, as Barrett Heisten chased down a rebound of Patrick Wellar's initial shot and fed the puck back to Wellar, who ripped it past Phoenix goalie Mike Morrison at 8:04. Alaska scored the first of its three power play goals seven minutes later when a Scott pass found its way to Joe Talbot's stick. The older brother of ECHL all-star Julian made no mistake, sending his 11th goal in 22 games past a sprawling Morrison for a 2-0 spread at the break.
Peter Metcalf found a wide-open Scott in the neutral zone for a breakaway four minutes into the second period, and the Aces captain beat Morrison with a backhander top shelf. Cam Paddock scored the first of his two goals to cut the deficit to 3-1 at 7:45, but Julian Talbot punched home a loose puck in front less than six minutes later for his 15th goal of the year, a marker that left Alaska ahead 4-1 with 20 minutes to play.
Paddock brought the 'Runners to within 4-2 on a power play goal just 1:31 into the third period, but Phoenix would draw no closer, and Heisten's tip-in of a Kimbi Daniels drive from the point with 8:23 remaining accounted for the final margin. Derek Gustafson finished with 26 saves in collecting his eighth straight victory at home. He has won 12 of his last 13 starts overall.
The Aces have scored 18 power play goals over their last eight games and remain atop the ECHL with a 33-12-2 record. Alaska has won eight of its last nine games and 14 of its previous 16 overall, and after a 3-5 start at home, has gone 15-1-1 in its last 17 at Sullivan Arena, site of tomorrow's rematch at 7:15 p.m. The Aces wrap up the three-game series with the Roadrunners Sunday at 5:05 p.m., the second "Skate with the Aces," courtesy of Fred Meyer. Tickets are available online at www.alaskaaces.com or by calling 258-ACES. All games are broadcast live on the flagship home of Alaska Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM.
