Augusta Lynx News Release
Augusta, GA - Shane Hynes finally scored in the final end of a seven round shootout to give the Augusta Lynx a zdramatic 4-3 shootout win over the Gwinnett Gladiators Saturday night at the James Brown Arena.
The Lynx took over the game in the latter half of the third period, scoring twice with just 4:08 remaining to turn a 3-1 deficit into a tie game heading for overtime.
Weston Tardy's fifth goal of the year re-energized the home crowd as he snuck down from the point and potted a rebound over the right leg of Gwinnett goaltender Dave Caruso to make it a 3-2 game.
With the Lynx continuing to carry the momentum, Augusta forced the puck around the Gladiators' wall to Brian Passmore, who immediately fired a pass into the slot for Aaron Slattengren. Slattengren extended his stick to tip the puck over the shoulder of Caruso with just 2:01 remaining in regulation to tie the game and force the extra session.
It was there that Hynes converted, the only shooter to mark in seven attempts for each side.
Dave McKee stopped all seven shooters faced in the shootout and 24 of 27 through overtime for his 21st win of the year.
Colton Fretter took advantage of a turnover just inside the Augusta blue line for the opening period's only goal just 56 seconds after the opening faceoff. Fretter grabbed the puck near the Lynx line and moved in on the right side of McKee, cutting in front of the net before firing a shot high glove for the 1-0 Gwinnett lead.
Garrett Bembridge then tied the game at 2:22 for the Lynx on a tic-tac-toe power play goal from Brian Passmore and Sean Blanchard, his third such marker in the past two games.
Brad Schell and Scott Mifsud extended the Gladiators' lead to 3-1 after two periods. Gwinnett loses for just the third time this season when leading after two period of play in 24 games.
The Lynx and Gladiators get right back to battle tomorrow at 4 pm at the Arena at Gwinnett Center, with radio coverage beginning one half-hour before faceoff on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
