February 10, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
Shane Hynes' seventh round shootout goal lifted the Augusta Lynx to a 4-3 win over the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday night at the James Brown Arena in Augusta. Gwinnett slips into a tie with the Texas Wildcatters for first in the ECHL's South Division with the shootout loss and fall to 28-13-6 on the season. Colton Fretter posted his 33rd goal of the season just 56 seconds into the first period to give Gwinnett an early 1-0 lead on Augusta. Fretter stripped an Augusta defenseman just inside the Lynx blue line and bested Augusta netminder Dave McKee on a breakaway for the unassisted marker. With the goal, Fretter tied the Gladiators team record for most goals in a season. He matched the previous record shared by Guillaume Desbiens, who had 33 goals last year, and Kevin Doell, who set the original record during the Gladiators inaugural 2003-04 season. Augusta tied the game at one on the power play at the 2:22 mark of the second period. Garrett Bembridge beat Gladiators netminder Dave Caruso to the short side as the Lynx forward was parked along the goal line and redirected a pass behind Caruso for the goal. Brian Passmore and Sean Blanchard collected the assists on the goal for Augusta. Gwinnett regained the lead at the 6:59 mark of the second period. Brad Schell tapped a loose puck that trickled past McKee and sat in the crease in the net for his 20th goal of the season. Scott Mifsud and Fretter posted the assists on the goal for Gwinnett. Mifsud pushed the Gladiators lead to 3-1 at the 13:56 mark of the second.
Walking over the blueline, Mifsud ripped a slapshot off the shoulder of McKee and into the back of the net for the goal. Matt York and Schell collected the assists on the power play goal for Gwinnett. Augusta cut the Gladiators lead to one at the 15:42 mark of the third period as Weston Tardy found a loose puck in the slot and tapped it past Caruso for the goal. Aaron Slattengren collected the assists on the goal for Augusta. Slattengren pushed the game to overtime with 2:01 left in the third period as he deflected the puck past Caruso for the goal while he was parked in the slot. Passmore and Hynes posted the assists on the goal that tied the game at three. Hynes had the only goal in the shootout for the win for Augusta. Caruso finished with 27 saves for the Gladiators in the loss while turning aside 6 of 7 shooters in the shootout in the loss.
