Idaho Steelheads News Release

Boise, ID - Darrell Hay's first period, power play tally turned out to be the eventual game-winner, as Steve Silverthorn pitched his fourth shutout of the season helping the Steelheads down the Victoria Salmon Kings 2-0 in front of a sold out crowd of 5,055 fans at Qwest Arena on Saturday night.

The win gives the Steelheads 53 points overall bumping them (25-18-2-1) into fourth place in the National Conference, as they gather their 11th win at home. The victory also marks the second time the Steelheads have shutout the Salmon Kings this season, signaling the visitors' third scoreless game this year. It was also the final meeting of the season series, with the Steelheads posting a 5-3-0-0 record.

Midway through the first period the Steelheads got their first of two power play goals on a wrist shot by Hay that found its way through traffic and past Salmon Kings' goaltender Julien Ellis (34 saves) for a 1-0 lead. Fellow defenseman Kyle Peto got the lone helper, his fourth point in the last four contests. The goal at 12:23 was Hay's sixth of the season and his second in as many nights.

At 4:18 of the second period, the Steelheads man advantage struck again, making the score 2-0. Rookie forward Taggart Desmet carried the puck into the offensive zone along the left wing side and his initial shot was turned aside by Ellis. However, the rebound came right back to Desmet, and he beat the rookie net minder through his right arm for his sixth goal of the season. Forwards Colin Shields and Marty Flichel drew the helpers.

Through two periods, the Steelheads led 2-0 and they out-shot the Salmon Kings 27-17.

In a scoreless third period, Silverthorn made 17 saves to preserve his 21st win of the season. Ellis drops to 10-11-0-0, as he loses for the first time in his last five outings. The Steelheads finished the night at two-for-seven on the power play and a perfect seven-for-seven on the penalty kill. For the three-game series, the Steelheads' penalty killers held the Salmon Kings without a goal in 15 opportunities. Tonight's final shots favored the Steelheads 36-34.

The Steelheads continue their six-game home stand against the Las Vegas Wranglers beginning on Wednesday, February 14. The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. MST. Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
