South Carolina Stingrays News Release
BEAUMONT, Texas - Defenseman Donny Grover scored in overtime and goaltender Davis Parley, who was playing in a rare four consecutive nights, including one game for Hershey in the American Hockey League and three straight for South Carolina, backstopped the Stingrays by making 43 saves in a 4-3 overtime victory over the Texas Wildcatters at Ford Arena.
"I am really proud of our team," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "We kept battling and perservered. The guys gave it everything they had and everyone was on board. We'll savor this win for a couple days."
South Carolina (23-16-3, 49 points) hit stride at the 8:51 mark of the first period. Cam McCaffrey fed the puck in front to Evan Schwabe, who beat netminder Matt Yeats for his 14th tally of the campaign. Josh Anderson also picked up an assist.
Matt Stefanishion made it 2-0 for the Stingrays by taking a breakaway pass from Donny Grover at 14:01. The goal for Stefanishion was his eighth of the season.
Texas (24-12-5, 54 points) cut the margin in half with a power play goal in the second period. Mike Madill registered his third goal of the season at 10:18 getting the puck past Parley, who was making his 17th straight start in the South Carolina net. Brandin Cote collected the lone helper.
In the third, Marco Rosa tied the score at two by tallying his 18th goal of the year at 5:57 from Mike Bayrack and Yeats.
Then Bayrack gave Texas a 3-2 lead at 8:56 with a shot over the left shoulder of Parley, assisted by James Sanford and Madill.
Stefanishion knotted up the game at 12:11 on a 2-on-1 break by snapping a shot high into the Texas cage for his second of the game. Scott Romfo garnered a helper.
In overtime on the power play, Grover ended the contest with a slapshot 31 seconds into the extra session from Peter Szabo and Matt Reid.
South Carolina went 1-for-5 with the man advantage, while Texas converted on 2-of-9 opportunities. Stingrays outshot the Wildcatters 50-46.
