Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Behind a suffocating defense that limited Stockton to just a pair of third period shots and 18 for the game, Alaska continued its recent surge at home, beating the Thunder 3-1 in front of 5,197 Friday at Sullivan Arena.
The Aces have gone 11-1-1 in their last 13 home games after Friday's win, a game that remained scoreless until the waning seconds of the opening period. Kimbi Daniels let a shot fly from the high slot that Matt Shasby flicked home on a rebound with just 10.8 seconds showing on the first period clock, Alaska's first power play goal in 20 chances over five games against Stockton.
The Thunder answered midway through the second period, as Mike Lalonde scored his second power play goal in as many games to tie the contest 1-1 at 8:39 in a five-on-three situation. But the Aces regained the lead for good, when Stephen Wood and Olivier Filion worked a give-and-go with the teams skating four-on-four. Wood's fifth goal in his 10th game as an Ace put Alaska ahead 2-1 with 3:51 left in the middle frame.
Kevin Croxton provided an insurance goal just 54 seconds into the third period, his 16th of the year, tied for third among ECHL rookies. Leading 3-1, the Aces did not allow Stockton a shot on goal until eight and a half minutes were left in regulation. The Thunder had fired more than 40 shots in each of the last two games between these two clubs, but was out-shot by a two-to-one margin, 36-18, in losing for the 10th time in 11 games against Alaska over two seasons.
Goaltender Chris Beckford-Tseu improved his record to 6-0 with the Aces this season, and in 25 regular season starts for Alaska over two years, he has lost exactly once (22-1-2). The Aces own the best record in the ECHL at 27-11-2 heading into tomorrow's rematch at 7:15 p.m., their fifth straight game against Stockton (19-10-8) and the final regular season meeting scheduled between the two teams this season. Tickets are now available by calling 258-ACES or at www.alaskaaces.com.
