Dayton Bombers News Release

Dayton, OH- Led by a stellar performance from Adam Berkoel, the Bombers created just enough offense to top the Cincinnati Cyclones 1-0 in front of 7,845 fans at the E.J. Nutter Center.

The Bombers faced what the club was calling a must win and came prepared to play. The tone was set in the first five minutes by defenseman Lane Manson when Manson and Cyclone defenseman Jimmy Bonneau decided to drop the gloves. Manson, standing 6'9'', used his long reach to land shots on the chin of 6'3'' Bonneau. The physical play continued through the first period with both sides giving everything they had. In the first period alone there were eight penalties, three on Dayton and five on Cincinnati. However, neither team was able to capitalize on the power play.

The second period saw much of the same play. Dominating the game were both teams' goaltenders. The Cincinnati Cyclones' net minder, Cedric Desjardins, lived up to his All-Star status making key saves to keep Cincinnati in the game. At the other end of the ice was Dayton's All-Star MVP goalie Adam Berkhoel, who turned away every Cyclone scoring chance. At the 16:41 mark Bomber's forward Matt Herneisen took a stick to the face from Cyclones' forward Cory Urquhart. Urquhart was given a five minute slashing major, as well as a game misconduct, sending the Cyclone's best offensive weapon to the locker room for the rest of the night. Later in the period the Bomber's seemed to break the tie when Justin Maiser batted in a bouncing puck past Desjardins. However, the goal was disallowed. The referee believed Maiser lifted his stick above the crossbar to bat the puck in. The teams entered the locker rooms still tied 0-0.

Only two minutes into the third period Bombers' forward Yannick Tifu received a pass from Matt Herneisen, took the puck nearly coast-to-coast then passed to streaking Russian forwardDmitri Chernykh, who drove the puck to the back of the net, finally breaking the tie. The Bombers held the lead with exceptional goaltending and physical play. Adam Berkhoel picked up the shut out, giving him the club record of four shut outs in a season.

The Bombers return to the Nutter Center Tuesday night, January 30, at 7:00 p.m. to take on the Wheeling Nailers. The game is a "Two for Tuesday" presented by Prestige Ford.
