
Stingrays Nip Inferno 5-4

Columbia, S.C. - Scott Romfo scored the eventual game winning goal with 7 minutes left in the third period, as the South Carolina Stingrays defeated the Columbia Inferno by a score of 5-4.
"It was a good win for us," said Stingray's Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I thought Josh Johnson played great in net for us and gave us a chance to win this game."
The Rays got the lead in the first period when Stephen Werner scored his 3rd goal of the season with assists from Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Matt Reid at 16:01. Coming into this game the Stingrays were 3-0 in games when they are leading after the first period.
In the second period they increased their lead with 2 goals by Travis Morin. Morin who had a hat trick on Wednesday, scored his 7th and 8th goals of the season. His first goal came at 2:30 on the power play with assists from Patrick McNeill and Cail MacLean. His second goal came at 8:05 with assists from MacLean and T.J. McElroy. The Inferno would counter with two goals of their own to cut the lead to one. With just .4 seconds left on the clock Matt W. Reid showed why you need to play the entire 20 minutes. At 19:59.6 of the 2nd period Reid scored his 5th goal of the season with an assist from O'Brien.
Up 4-2 going into the third period, the Inferno scored to once again cut the lead to 1 goal, 4-3. The Rays would increase the lead to 2 with Scott Romfo's 2nd goal of the season, with assists from Chris Chaput and McElroy, at 12:52. The Inferno would score again to make it 5-4 on the power play, with just over 2 minutes to play in the game. With the man advantage, they would pull their goalie, Todd Ford, in favor of the extra attacker, but were unable to score even though they were skating 6 on 4.
"I thought we were much better in our own zone this game versus the last time we played. Getting more practice in will help us work on that before the next time we go out there."
The winning goaltender was Josh Johnson who turned away 32 of 36 shots. The losing goalie was Ford who made 22 saves on 27 shots. The Rays went 1 for 7 on the power play, while killing of 8 of 10 short handed situations.
The Stingrays are back in action on Wednesday at Charlotte as they travel to face the Checkers. Game time will be at 7:05 with the Benito's pre-game show beginning at 6:50.
