Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Chris Beckford-Tseu stopped 25 shots as Alaska's early 2-0 lead stood up in an eventual 3-1 victory over the Florida Everblades before 5,504 Friday at Sullivan Arena.

The Aces have won their last four home openers after going 1-7-1 in their first nine years of existence. Beckford-Tseu improved his regular season record as Alaska's starter to 25-2-2. The game featured teams based 4,926 miles apart, the longest distance ever between two North American hockey opponents.

The first period saw both teams garner a number of scoring chances until the Aces scored on back-to-back shots, the first of which was set up by Peter Metcalf, who faked a slap shot and slid a perfect centering pass to Josh Soares, whose redirection gave Alaska a 1-0 lead at the 10:51 mark. With five minutes left in the frame, Bo Cheesman swept through the Florida defense and scored his third goal in as many games on a backhander top shelf.

The pace slowed significantly over the final 40 minutes, with the Aces holding a 2-0 edge heading to the third period despite mustering only three shots on goal in the second. Derek Damon's centering pass glanced off Ernie Hartlieb's chest to finally put the Everblades on the board with 8:58 left in regulation, a goal Alaska contested, but Florida never got the equalizer. Cam Keith's empty-netter in the game's final minute secured the win.

The Aces (3-1-1) and Everblades meet again tomorrow at 7:15 p.m. and Sunday at 5:05 p.m., with the early start followed by the traditional post-game Fred Meyer "Skate with the Aces." All regular season games will be broadcast live on Alaska's flagship station, AM 750 KFQD, with coverage beginning 15 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
