Stingrays Get Back in Win Column with 4-1 Victory over Atlanta

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC-A pair of goals in the first period from rookie forward Brett Cameron was just what the South Carolina Stingrays needed to end a five-game winless streak. South Carolina topped the rival Atlanta Gladiators 4-1 at the North Charleston Coliseum on Friday night thanks to a Cameron's two goals, and tallies from David Pacan and Jared Staal.

After trailing 3-0 in their last two losses, the Stingrays made sure to break the trend on Saturday. South Carolina outshot Atlanta 14-5 in the opening period and Cameron notched his 10th and 11th goals of the season to get the home fans to their feet early. Cameron's first goal came at 4:49 from the front of the goal. Pacan wrapped the puck to the slot and Atlanta netminder Kent Patterson was unable to track the play. Cameron collected the loose puck and walked around the goaltender, sliding a shot past his left pad to make it 1-0 Stingrays.

Cameron would collect his second goal at 12:10, knocking a loose puck past Patterson from the right side of the crease. Patrick Gaul moved the puck in front of the net, and Patterson denied the first shot. Cameron swooped in for the rebound, converting for his second goal of the game.

The two teams would skate in a more even second period, but lone tally of the middle frame came from Pacan. The forward struck for his third goal in as many games on a perfectly executed three-on-two rush. Brendan Ellis stole the puck in his own zone and charged up ice. He sent a pass to Marcus Perrier on the left wing. The forward drove the puck wide and found Pacan open in the slot. Patterson charged out of his net, but Pacan's shot beat him over the catching glove to make it 3-0 Stingrays. The goal was Pacan's team-leading 12th of the season.

The Gladiators would throw everything they had at the Stingrays in the third period, outshooting South Carolina 11-4. Brock Higgs would finally find the back of the net for Atlanta at 10:23, scoring his 16th goal of the season on the power play at 10:23 to cut South Carolina's lead to 3-1. Gary Nunn's slap shot was denied by Stingrays netminder Vitek Vanecek, but the rebound sat loose in the crease and Higgs collected his ninth power play goal of the season.

South Carolina would answer just a few minutes later. Staal was rewarded for a strong game with his sixth goal of the season. Patterson made a mistake, attempting to chase down a loose puck behind his own net. Staal beat him to it, and wrapped the puck around the goal and into the vacated net o make it 4-1 Stingrays at 14:52. Ellis and Shea assisted.

Vanecek finished the game with 24 saves. The Stingrays outshot the Gladiators 30-25 and evened the season series at three wins each with the Gladiators.
