INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Missouri Mavericks and Tulsa Oilers continued their tradition of 1-goal game decisions on Friday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena, as the Mavs defeated the visiting Oilers 2-1. Jesse Root, scored both goals for Missouri in their fourteenth win of the season on home ice.
Every game between these Central division rivals has been clinched by 1 goal this season, with all but 3 of their match-ups ending outside of regulation.
Aside from protecting the Mavericks' perfect home record, now 14-0-0-0, the win boosted net-minder Josh Robinson to tie the league record win streak for a goaltender in a single-season (16). Robinson owns a nearly flawless 20-0-0-1 overall record, his lone shootout loss taken against the Tulsa Oilers on Oct. 30, 2015.
The Oilers were first to make a mark on the scoreboard Friday night, with Phil Brewer notching an unassisted tally to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead at 10:18. Missouri answered back at 15:31 when leading goal-scorer, Jesse Root, put away the equalizer with the help of Josh Holmstrom.
The division rivals remained locked in a 1-1 stalemate through the rest of the opening period and the entire second frame, but a penalty dealt to the Oilers' Aaron Harstad in the final minute of the period would give Missouri an important man-advantage at the top of the third.
Just 11 seconds into the final frame of regulation, Jesse Root scored his second goal of the night to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead over the Oilers in a power-play situation. Kane Lafranchise and Andrew Courtney assisted on Root's 18th goal of the season.
The Mavericks kept and aggressive stance through the remainder of regulation, holding back the Oilers' efforts to secure their fourteenth win on home ice and improve to 31-4-1-1 overall.
The Mavericks play their next game tomorrow night when they face-off once again against the Tulsa Oilers at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Puck drops at 7:05p.m.
Saturday night is 80's Night!
