Weekend Preview: IceMen Begin Six Game Road Trip

January 22, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Evansville IceMen News Release

ALL OVER THE ROAD

The Evansville IceMen start a six game road trip in nine days on the East Coast with games this weekend at Greenville (Friday) and Atlanta (Saturday). The team then travels back to the Midwest for games at Missouri (Tuesday) and Wichita (Wednesday). Finally, the IceMen take on the Indy Fuel in Indianapolis Friday and Saturday, January 29-30.

HALFWAY POINT

Evansville is currently eight points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference standings at the halfway point of the season. The IceMen finish off the regular season with 16 home games and 20 contests on the road.

WEEK OF MOVEMENT

In separate transactions this week, the IceMen traded defenseman Benjamin Dieude-Fauvel to the Rapid City Rush and forward Alex Wideman was recalled by the AHL's Binghamton Senators. The BSens also assigned defensemen Troy Rutkowski and Ben Harpur to Evansville and the two will join the team on the road trip.

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

Last Saturday, Evansville went toe-to-toe with the Quad City Mallards in front of 8,229 in attendance for Star Wars night at the Ford Center, but the Mallards edged the IceMen 2-1 late in the third period. Forward Danny Hobbs scored the lone goal for the IceMen on the power play, and goalie Cody Reichard made 29 saves in the loss.

BACK TO THE SWAMP

Last time the IceMen were in Greenville, Evansville overcame a 2-0 third period deficit to beat the Swamp Rabbits 3-2 on Halloween at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Three rookies (Vincent Dunn, Matthew Zay and Ryan Penny) scored the goals for the IceMen in the comeback win.

STELLAR SOUTH

The South Division currently has four of its five teams in playoff positions in the Eastern Conference. The division leader, the Florida Everblades, have the best record in the conference, and the Atlanta Gladiators are fourth and in second place in the division. The South Carolina Stingrays and Greenville Swamp Rabbits are sixth and seventh, respectively, and the Orlando Solar Bears are three points out of a playoff spot.

DOWN TO GEORGIA

Saturday, the IceMen make their only trip to Duluth, GA to face the Atlanta Gladiators at 7:05pm EST at Infinite Energy Arena. Derek Nesbitt, who scored the Gladiators' overtime winner in Atlanta's 6-5 over Evansville December 16 at the Ford Center, leads the league in scoring with 20 goals in 40 games. With the IceMen leading 5-4 late in that game, Justin Buzzeo tied the score with under a minute left in regulation to force overtime. The two teams wrap up the season series February 26-27 in Evansville.
