South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, S.C. - The South Carolina Stingrays (8-0-1-1) erased a two-goal deficit, but fell to the Evansville IceMen (6-1-0-0) 3-2 in overtime to snap an eight-game winning streak, but extended the season-opening point streak to 10 contests at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday evening.
IceMen forward Matt Lowry opened the scoring at 11:19 of the first period tapping a pass from forward Matt Schepke under the glove of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (OTL, 21 saves on 24 shots). Forward Josh Beaulieu added the second assist.
Forward Nathan Moon made it a 2-0 IceMen advantage slipping a backhanded shot between the legs of Jakaitis at 6:45 of the second period with help from forward Patrick Kennedy.
For the third time in five games, the Stingrays erased a two-goal deficit with third-period tallies from forwards Marc Hagel and Andrew Cherniwchan. Hagel pulled the Stingrays within one on the power play at 5:07 of the final frame blasting a pass from forward Chad Painchaud past IceMen netminder Mike Clemente (W, 28 saves on 30 shots) from the bottom of the left-wing circle. Forward Chris Langkow netted the second assist. Cherniwchan tied the contest off a great individual effort to move around the defenseman and bury his first goal of the season at 14:28 with help from defenseman Steve Spinell and forward Jordan Owens. In overtime, Moon grabbed the game-winning goal 32 seconds into the extra session from forward Jeremy Langlois. The Stingrays finished the game 1-for-5 on the power play while the IceMen went 0-for-3.
The Stingrays wrap up a three-game in three-day series tomorrow, Saturday, November 9 against the IceMen at 7:05 at the North Charleston Coliseum. After the contest, the Stingrays join the South Carolina Advocates for Epilepsy and MUSC Neurosciences for a Hockey Heroes for Epilepsy Preview Party at Ms. Rose's in Charleston. Hockey Heroes for Epilepsy Night featuring purple awareness jerseys, live postgame jersey auction and silent auction is Saturday, November 16 at 7:05 against the Florida Everblades at the Coliseum.
