TONIGHT:
The Ontario Reign (4-0-1-2) begin their seven-game road trip in West Valley City with a three-game series against the Utah Grizzlies (1-3-1-1) at the Maverik Center. This is their first meeting since the Reign swept the Grizzlies in four games for the first round of the 2013 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
FAMILIAR FACES:
The Grizzlies just picked up former Reign player Michael Pelech who was on Ontario's roster from 2009-11 for a total of 135 games. Some less familiar faces are those of the rest of the Grizzlies' squad as there are only three players returning from their 2012-13 roster; there are two other players on this year's team but they played eight or fewer games with Utah during the 2012-13 season. In comparison, Ontario has seven players from last year's roster, plus two that played in five or fewer regular season games.
SPECIAL TEAM STATS:
The Reign have room to improve with both their power play and penalty kill units with overall ratings of 14.3% and 80%, respectively. Heading into Utah, they face a team with a perfect at-home penalty kill allowing zero goals on 17 opportunities.
SHOTS FIRED:
The Reign have come out strong in the first period with an average of 10.43 shots on goal in the first period. The Grizzlies will be hoping to keep up the pace they have set so far this season as they have an average of 12 shots on goal in the first. In the second period, the Grizzlies have shown some weakness as their average shot count drops down to seven; plus the Reign have scored more goals in the second period than any other frame so far this season. Only twice in 2013-14 has Ontario been shutout in a frame.
