Second Trip to the Fort

With 2013-14 serving as only the second year in the ECHL for the Fort Wayne Komets (62nd overall), the Wheeling Nailers are rather unfamiliar with Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. In fact, the Nailers and Komets met up just twice last season, with Wheeling sweeping the season series, courtesy of a 3-2 overtime win in the Ohio Valley on December 15th, before a 1-0 win in regulation on February 24th. This year, the two squads will double their total meetings, as the Nailers and Komets will clash four times, with three of those battles taking place in Indiana.

Another Third Period Rally

For the second game in a row, the Nailers were down, but not out, as they trailed the Kalamazoo Wings 1-0 after two periods of play on Wednesday. After surrendering an early goal to make the score 2-0, Wheeling rallied back with Cody Sylvester's tally at 4:56, before Jack MacLellan tied the contest with 37 seconds remaining. Although the Wings ultimately won in a shootout, the Nailers were able to secure their first road point of the season. Wheeling has now scored nine of its 14 goals this season during the third period. The Komets have ran into the majority of their trouble during the third period, allowing 11 of their 21 goals against during the final stanza of regulation.

Seven Straight Comes to an End

Friday night's contest against Fort Wayne marks the final tilt in a seven-game stretch in which Wheeling begins the 2013-14 season by facing all different opponents. Thus far, the Nailers have posted a 2-3-0-1 record, having gone to battle against Elmira, Cincinnati, Toledo, Reading, Greenville, and Kalamazoo. After Friday, Wheeling won't see an eighth opponent on the docket until December 14th, when the Florida Everblades swim up to WesBanco Arena.

Sabres Sending Saves

The Buffalo Sabres are one of three NHL teams (Colorado, Philadelphia) without an ECHL affiliate, but that hasn't prevented them from having an impact on goal creases around the league. Last week, the Nailers saw former Buffalo draft pick Connor Knapp, who has stopped 129 of 137 shots in four starts this season with the Greenville Road Warriors. On Friday night, Wheeling will be opposed by rookie Andrey Makarov, who has turned away 89 of 93 shots in three games with the Fort Wayne Komets, since being assigned from Rochester early last week.

Two Against None

For the fourth consecutive season, the Nailers are taking the ice with two National Hockey League affiliates, thanks to strong partnerships with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens. Wheeling is one of seven teams (Cincinnati, Elmira, Florida, Kalamazoo, Orlando, Toledo) in the ECHL with two affiliates, and all seven are members of the Eastern Conference. On the other side of the ice, after one season with the Anaheim Ducks, Fort Wayne has opted to go the independent route, serving as the only team in the Eastern Conference without an affiliate, as well as one of three teams in the league (Colorado, Las Vegas) without one.
