Elmira Jackals News Release
ESTERO, Fla. - The Elmira Jackals picked up their first regular season win in the state of Florida since December of 2011 with a 6-5 win over the Florida Everblades on Friday night. The win improved the Jackals' record to 3-5-0 on the season.
Scoring came at a break-neck pace in the first period, and when the dust finally settled the Jackals were left standing with a one-goal lead. Carl Nielsen began the fireworks with his first pro goal, shorthanded, at the 6:25 mark. It was the fourth game in a row the Jackals surrendered the first goal, but they didn't wilt under the early deficit. Danny New and Kyle Bushee scored their first goals of the season 54 seconds apart to put Elmira in the lead for the first time. Danny Hobbs assisted on each goal to begin his huge night. Florida's Matt Pistilli tied the game again 1:14 after Bushee's goal, but Elmira retook the lead at 12;49 when Maxim Lamarche netted his first pro goal. The final volley of scores came within the final minute on a Florida power play goal by Mike Little (19:00) and an even-strength marker by Hobbs (19:27)
The second period belonged to the Jackals, despite Florida changing goalies to try to change momentum. Trevor Cann started and gave up four goals on 11 shots. Jesse Deckert came on in relief and gave up a goal on the first shot he face. Artem Demkov punched home a centering feed from Matt Carter 1:13 into the stanza for his seventh of the season and extended Elmira's lead to two at 5-3. Hobbs then tucked in what proved to be the game winner at 16:20. Demkov and Philip-Michael Devos set up Hobbs off of the rush for his second of the night. The goal capped Hobbs' third four-point night (2 goals, 2 assists) of his career.
In turn, the Everblades owned the third period. They outshot the Jackals 18-0 and picked up a pair of goals for their efforts. Mathieu Roy scored a shorthanded penalty shot goal to bring the 'Blades within one just 27 seconds into the period. Pistilli followed on at 6:26 to close the gap to one. Elmira goalie Scott Greenham faced a barrage of quality chances over the final 10 minutes but stood tall amidst the challenge and helped Elmira hang on for the win.
Greenham stopped 36 shots for his third win of the season while Deckert stopped 5 of 7 in taking the loss. Elmira was 1-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
