South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - Viktor Dovgan had a goal and an assist to help the South Carolina Stingrays hold off the Reading Royals 3-2 in front of 6,521 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum.
With the win, South Carolina moved into the sole possession of the fifth and final playoff spot in the ECHL's South Division as Charlotte had the night off.
"We played another solid game," South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. "I liked the way that we battled through adversity winning the last three games in three days. We are already looking ahead to the two road games at Florida that are expected to be tough on Tuesday and Wednesday."
Reading (27-27-6, 60 points) scored the opening goal at the 6:44 mark of the first period. On a 4-on-4 situation, Malcolm MacMillan swatted the puck from the slot through a maze of legs to beat goaltender Davis Parley for his ninth goal of the year. Jason Becker picked up the lone assist.
South Carolina (30-23-7, 67 points) tied up the score at 1-1 as Dovgan re-directed a Cam McCaffrey blast from the high slot past netminder Yutaka Fukufuji. Dovgan's fifth tally of the season was also assisted by Peter Szabo.
In the second, current South Carolina captain and former Reading captain Cail MacLean, who missed the last seven games returns on the night that his bobble head was handed to the fans courtesy of Comcast, scored on the power play at 6:49 on a pass from the corner that got by Fukufuji for his 22nd tally of the campaign. Szabo and Evan Schwabe garnered helpers.
Matt Stefanishion made it 3-1 for the Stingrays, taking a Dovgan pass and whistling a shot into the back of the net from the slot for his 14th marker of the year and second in as many nights. Scott Romfo also collected an assist.
Joe Zappala snapped in an unassisted tally from the right circle at 1:06 of the third period, but the Royals couldn't get the equalizer.
South Carolina converted on 1-of-6 power play chances, while Reading went 0-for-5. Stingrays outshot the Royals 36-24.
