Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (37-18-4) dropped a 5-2 decision to the Pensacola Ice Pilots (19-38-3) on Saturday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,541.
Just as they had a night before, the Everblades scored the game's first goal early in the first period. Brad Zancanaro collected his 14th goal of the season by converting on a breakaway 5:31 into the contest. Ryan Brindley picked up the lone assist after springing Zancanaro with a bank pass off the right boards.
The lead was short-lived however as the Ice Pilots tied the game at one just three and a half minutes later when Rene Gauthier back-handed a shot over the glove of Everblades goaltender Craig Kowalski from the slot at 9:05. Pensacola then took the lead for good with their second short-handed goal in as many games when David Wrigley blocked a point shot by Frank MacDonald and raced in to beat Kowalski with a slap shot from the left circle at 11:42.
The Ice Pilots increased their lead to 3-1 when Sergei Ogorodnikov notched his 15th goal of the season by tucking the puck inside the right post from behind the net at 12:42, but the Everblades trimmed the lead back to one late in the opening period as Adam Taylor deflected a shot past Ice Pilots net minder Michael Mole with 2:50 left in the frame. Brad Parsons and MacDonald assisted on Taylor's 18th goal of the season, which came with the Everblades holding a 5-on-3 power play.
From there, Mole took over, stopping 30 shots in the final two periods while the Ice Pilots continued to pressure the Everblades and added two more goals. Pensacola increased their lead to 4-2 at the 14:00 mark of the second period when Dan Riedel tallied a 5-on-3 power play goal after John Hecimovic's shot from the left circle clanked off the left post and right to him at the bottom of the right circle. The scoring closed with former Everblade Derrick Byfuglien slapping a shot into the upper right corner of the net 5:22 into the third period. The goal was Byfuglien's third of the season.
Mole (13-17-2) stopped 39 of 41 shots to earn the win, while Kowalski (24-11-3) suffered the loss allowing the five goals on 35 shots.
On the power play, the Everblades closed out the night 1-for-8, while the Ice Pilots finished the game 1-for-6.
The Florida Everblades, proud affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers, return to the ice on Tuesday, March 13 when they host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:30 p.m. from Germain Arena.
