Idaho Steelheads News Release
Bakersfield, California - Rookie B.J. Crombeen netted the game-winning goal plus an assist to fuel the Steelheads to a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the Bakersfield Condors at Rabobank Arena on Saturday night.
With the win, the Steelheads (28-16-7) remain unbeaten on their six-game road trip at 2-0-1, while snapping the Condors (22-19-5) winning streak at three games.
The two sides traded even-strength markers in the first stanza, with the Steelheads scoring first for the third time in the season series. At 4:11 of the period, Paul Caponigri batted the puck out of mid air for his 10th goal of the season and his third with the Steelheads. David Bararuk and Greg Hornby drew the assists.
At the 6:33 mark of the frame, the Condors tied the score on Sean Venedam's 26th of the year and his seventh against the Steelheads. Kevin St. Jacques and defenseman Kevin Truelson got the helpers, as Venedam found an opening at the right circles in the Steelheads' zone and lifted St. Jacques pass over a sliding Steve Silverthorn (44 saves).
The home team out-shot the Steelheads 15-11 in the first period.
Bararuk put the Steelheads in front for the second time in the game, beating goaltender Ryan Munce (27 saves) five-hole on a four-on-four goal at 14:28 of the second frame. Crombeen, who was stationed along the Condors' blue line on the right side, feathered a pass behind the Condors' defense to the oncoming Bararuk who gave Munce a head fake before finding the back of the net. It was Bararuk's 19th marker of the season.
With only 1:37 left in the second period, Crombeen gave the Steelheads a two-goal cushion with a power play goal. Crombeen walked into the Condors zone and from the slot he wristed a shot past Munce for his third goal in the last two games. Marty Flichel and D'Arcy McConvey set up the goal, Crombeen's first professional game-winner.
Andrew Ianiero scored the only goal of the third period, beating Silverthorn on a shorthanded breakaway just 51 seconds into the stanza. Brian Collins got the only assist, on the tally that made it 3-2. With the Condors pressing for the equalizer, Silverthorn came up with several brilliant stops, and 21 overall in the period. St. Jacques hit the crossbar with only 10 seconds to go, thwarting the Condors comeback.
The final shots were 46-30 in favor of the Condors, as the Steelheads remain one point ahead of the Utah Grizzlies for third place in the West Division.
The six-game, season series is now complete, as the Steelheads end up with a 2-2-2 mark against the Condors.
The Steelheads complete the California portion of their six-game road trip with an afternoon tilt on Sunday, February 19 against the Stockton Thunder. The puck drops at 5:00 p.m. MST. All the action can be heard live on ESPN Radio 1350 AM, "The Ticket," beginning approximately 20 minutes before the drop of the puck. For tickets, call 208-331-TIXS.
