Victoria Salmon Kings News Release

Victoria, BC - It was the clash of the Navy towns as the Victoria Salmon Kings set up in San Diego to try remain undefeated against the Gulls this season. Despite a late charge, the Salmon Kings were sunk 4-3.

Victoria's Kurt Drummond and Mike Josephson were scratched from the line up, which gave the Salmon Kings a roster of 14 with which to work.

The game began with all cannons firing as both squads took the body to the boards. San Diego opened the scoring in the first period with two power play goals. Pierre-Luc Sleigher was left alone on the side of the net to beat BJ Boxma at 5:28, and Nikita Korovkin popped in the second power play goal at 8:53 to give the Gulls the 2-0 lead.

The Salmon Kings dominated the second frame, out shooting the Gulls 18-9, and scored the only goal of the period. Adam Huxley tallied his second goal in two nights as he banged away at the loose puck from a play started by Tyler Shybunka in transition.

San Diego held the 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. Forward Rob Flynn scored two consecutive power play goals two and a half minutes apart, to widen the gap to 4-1.

Seth Leonard capitalized at even strength with a backhander past Netminder Tom Lawson to bring the Salmon Kings within one, and Ryan Wade scored with just 22 seconds remaining in the third to keep the 12,240 fans in their seats for the finish.

The Salmon Kings savvy was not enough as the Gulls broke a six-game losing streak. San Diego will visit Victoria for a three game series starting March 15.

Victoria was 1-8 on the power play and San Diego scored four times on nine opportunities with the man advantage. Lawson made 34 saves for his 11th win of the season and Boxma was dealt his 11th loss. Victoria out shot San Diego 37-27.

The Salmon Kings will roll the dice in game three of the road trip in Las Vegas against the National Conference second-ranked Wranglers, before heading home for a series versus the Alaska Aces.
