Bakersfield Condors News Release
BAKERSFIELD, Calif.,- Andrew Ianiero's shorthanded goal late in the third period brought the Bakersfield Condors within a goal of the visiting Idaho Steelheads, but tallies by David Bararuk and B.J. Crombeen in the second would be the difference in the Condors' 3-2 loss in front of 7,264 fans at the Rabobank Arena.
Greg Hornby threw the puck onto the net early in the first period to create Idaho's first quality scoring chance of the night. Hornby's shot was saved by Munce, but Paul Caponigri popped the rebound into the net to give the Steelheads an early 1-0 lead just 4:11 into the game.
Bakersfield answered back as Kevin St. Jacques controlled the puck at the base of the far circle. St. Jacques sent a backhander through the slot past Brad Mehalko, and Sean Venedam buried the wrist shot from the near circle to tie the game at 1-1 with 13:27 left in the first period.
David Bararuk gave the Steelheads a 2-1 lead on a short four-on-four breakaway, beating Ryan Munce through the five hole with 5:32 left in the second period. B.J. Crombeen matched the effort with a breakaway of his own on an Idaho power play, sending a wrist shot from the slot over Munce's right shoulder at 18:23 of the second to make it 3-1 Idaho.
Brian Collins created a turnover on a Condors penalty kill under a minute into the third period and fed the puck to Andrew Ianiero. The Condors center streaked into the Idaho slot and fired a wrister past Steve Silverthorn to bring Bakersfield within a goal as Idaho lead 3-2 just 51 seconds into the final frame.
Ryan Munce would be pulled for the extra skater in the game's final minutes, but the Steelheads held off the late Condors onslaught despite being outshot by Bakersfield 19-4 in the third.
Steve Silverthorn picked up the victory making 44 saves on 46 Condor shots. Ryan Munce was credited with the loss despite stopping 27 of Idaho's 30 attempts.
Other notes:Ianiero's shorthanded goal was his sixth shorthanded point of the season, placing him second in the league behind Charlotte's Dusty Jamieson.
The Condors hit the road for three consecutive games against Pacific Division opponents next week. Bakersfield visits the Stockton Thunder on Wednesday, February 22nd, then travels to Fresno to take on the Falcons on Friday the 24th before returning to Stockton on the 25th.
