Blades earn 4-3 shootout win over Columbia

COLUMBIA, SC - The Florida Everblades (32-16-3) picked up an 11 round shootout win for the to complete a 4-3 come-from-behind win over the Columbia Inferno (18-30-6) on Sunday night at the Carolina Coliseum.

The Everblades fell behind by a pair of goals in the opening period but battled back to cut the lead in half late in the period. Columbia opened the scoring when Dallas Flaman deflected a shot from the slot past Everblades goaltender Phil Osaer at 11:02. The Inferno increased their lead to 2-0 late in the frame with a power play goal by Brandon Nolan at 18:04. The Everblades however countered by scoring with 53 seconds remaining in the period when Reggie Berg notched his fifth goal of the season with a quick wrist shot from the slot.

A wild second period featured the Everblades battling back from down 3-1 to tie the contest. Columbia regained their two-goal lead early on Flaman's second goal of the night at 5:29. For the second time in the game however the Everblades battled back. Dustin Johner collected a power play goal at 8:56 of the period after Inferno goaltender Jani Hurme got caught out of position. The Everblades tied the game at three with 4:58 remaining in the middle period when Berg tallied his second goal of the night deflecting a centering pass by Kevin Bergin past Hurme.

After neither team scored in the third period, the game moved to overtime where the Everblades killed off a Columbia power play to help send the game to overtime. In their longest shootout of the season, the Everblades eventually earned the extra point in the standings outscoring Collumbia 3-2 in the shootout when Steve Saviano scored in the 11th round. Saviano scored twice in the shootout, also tallying in the first round, and Dan Sisca also scored for Florida in the shootout in round two. Columbia picked up goals by Jeff Miles (2nd round) and Marc-Andre Bernier (5th round).

In goal, Osaer earned the win by stopping 30 of 33 shots in regulation and overtime to improve his record to 15-8-2. Hurme got credit for a tie bringing his record to 5-7-1 after making 27 saves in regulation and overtime.

On the power play, the Everblades finished the night 1-for-8, while the Inferno closed out the game 1-for-6.

The Everblades return to action on Tuesday, February 21 when they take on the Greenville Grrrowl at 7:05 p.m. from the BI-LO Center in Greenville, SC. Sunday's game can be heard via the internet only by visiting www.floridaeverblades.com.
