San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - After a long, grueling and frustrating road trip the San Diego Gulls finally came home to a huge crowd (12,240) Saturday and toughed out a win, breaking a six-game losing streak. San Diego, which still sits fourth the Pacific Division, gets set for another busy week with two home games against Utah sandwiched between a quick road contest in Phoenix.
WEEK IN REVIEW:
Feb. 14 @ Las Vegas:
It wasn't a very lovable Valentines Day for the Gulls, as they suffered their fifth straight loss after falling to the Wranglers 5-2 at the Orleans Arena. Steve Crampton led the way for Vegas with a hat trick, while linemates Dan Tudin and Matt Dzieduszycki each earned two assists. Jesse Bennefield gave the Gulls an early lead 38 seconds into the contest, but it was all Wranglers from there. Vegas scored four unanswered goals, three of which were scored in the second period, and cruised from there. Tempers flared in the third period, as teams combined for 80 penalty minutes.
Feb. 15 @ Bakersfield
The Gulls could only dress 13 healthy skaters and that would eventually catch up to them, as San Diego ran out of gas in the third period and the Condors skated away 3-1 winners. It was a 1-0 game heading into the third period, but Bakersfield defenseman Regan Leslie scored 1:21 into the final frame and Mike Hofstrand added another at 10:34 to make it 3-0. Steve Hildenbrand scored the lone Gulls goal with 3:04 left in the game, but the losing streak extended to a franchise-high six games.
Feb 18 vs. Victoria:
After going 8-for-97 on the power play in its previous 15 games, San Diego woke up with four power-play markers Saturday to beat the visiting Salmon Kings 4-3. Rob Flynn scored two of the goals, while Pierre-Luc Sleigher scored one and assisted on two others. Nikita Korovkin buried the other one for the Gulls, who broke their six-game losing streak. Victoria scored two goals late in the game to pull within one, but Tom Lawson and company would hold on for victory. The crowd of 12,240 was the eighth largest in franchise history, dating back to 1995.
Individual Notes:
Team captain Jonathon Shockey played his 500th professional game Saturday... Hildenbrand has points in four straight games (1g, 5a)... Bennefield has five points in his last four games (3g, 2a)... Lawson has stopped 258 of 281 shots in his last eight games (.918 save percentage)....
Team Notes:
The Gulls' four power-play goals Saturday pulled them out of an 8-for-97 slump... Saturday was also the first time in the last six games San Diego has skated with a full lineup of 16 skaters... The Gulls have scored nine of their 14 goals in the last six games in the third period... San Diego is 12-7-4 at home and 8-15-1 on the road...
San Diego returns to action Wednesday when they host the Utah Grizzlies at 7:05 p.m. The Gulls play in Phoenix Friday before coming back home Saturday against Utah. The first 8,000 fans at the Feb. 25 game will receive a special Gulls long-sleeved T-shirt, presented by Caltrans and Verizon Yellow Pages.
