STOCKTON, Calif. - Another game for Stockton Thunder (8-30-9, 25 points) goaltender Jake Moreland, another stolen point in the bag. The Thunder picked up a point in the standings by virtue of a 3-2 overtime loss against the Fresno Falcons (30-10-10, 70 points) Saturday night at Stockton Arena in front of 6360.
Moreland, who returned in net for the first time since February 5, set a new career-high and Thunder record with 56 saves, including 39 through two periods. The Falcons Luke Curtin netted the game winning goal 3:25 into overtime.
Both teams exchanged one-goal blows in the first period, beginning with Fraser Clair's goal at 8:06 for Fresno, tipping in a Shawn Weiman drive at the 8:06 mark. Aaron Foster responded for Stockton under three minutes later, backhanding a 15-footer past Fresno netminder Brett Jaeger to tie the game.
Moreland shook off his two-week rust with 19 first period saves.
Newcomer Lance Monych vaulted the Thunder ahead 2-1 with his second goal in three games, finishing a late odd-man break with a snap shot from the right circle with three minutes in. Moreland held Fresno scoreless through two periods with a whopping 20 saves.
Fresno tied the game at 2-2, when Kelsey Muench stole the puck near the Thunder goal and flipped a backhanded shot past Moreland at 9:57 in the third period.
Curtin scored the game winning goal on the power play, banging in a rebound from the right circle.
The Thunder held Fresno to one goal on eight attempts on the power play.
