Royals turn the table on Titans and win, 5-1

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (30-13-6=66) scored on three of their six power play chances in a game they never trailed, defeating the Trenton Titans, 5-1. After dropping a tight decision in Trenton last Wednesday, this win was the third consecutive victory this weekend for the Royals-and the first Sunday afternoon win in six tries this year-jumping the team to 30 wins on the year and preserving the Royals' position of first place in the North Division.

The Royals got on the board first in the latter stages of the first period, while playing on the team's third power play of the game. Defenseman Eric Werner started the play at the right point by firing a pass to Dany Roussin who was planted at the right post. As Werner charged the net, Roussin threw a saucer in front that Werner flailed at and missed, but Doug Christiansen was right behind him; and Christiansen slipped it behind the Titans' goaltender, Scott Stirling, to give Reading a 1-0 lead at the 18:04 mark of the first. For Christiansen, that was his team leading twenty-fourth goal of the season. Reading took a two goal lead early in the second when Roussin flipped an intended centering feed from behind the Trenton net that hit Stirling's left pad and bounced into the net for Roussin's twentieth goal of the year at the 1:26 mark of the second. The Titans responded 3:16 later, however, with a power play goal of their own when Rosario Ruggeri fired a shot from the high slot that ricocheted off the end wall and bounced out in front of Reading's goal. Trenton's Ned Havern swept in and batted the puck out of mid-air behind Rudkowsky to make it 2-1, Reading. Late in the second, the Royals regained a two goal advantage with the team's second power play goal of the night. After a long sequence of puck control in the offensive zone and concomitant scoring chances, Eric Werner fired one from the high slot that beat Stirling low to the stick side, breaking an eighteen game goal scoring drought for Werner, who ended up with three points in the game.

In the third, the Royals added two more, the first a nice re-direct by Grant Jacobsen of a Werner slap shot from the point while the Royals were on the power play 2:18 into the period; and the second, 44 seconds later, when Dustin Sproat ripped a hard wrist shot from the mid-slot behind Stirling for the first goal of his professional career. The Royals were able to preserve the victory behind the solid goaltending of Cody Rudkowsky, who ran his personal record to 15-3-3 with Reading this year.

The Royals and Titans go at it again on Tuesday night at 7:00 pm at the Sovereign Center. The Royals will honor the Reading Phillies baseball team that night by wearing special jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. The first 2000 fans 21 years of age and older at Tuesday's game will receive a special "baseball/puck" courtesy of All-Star Distributing.
