Idaho Steelheads News Release

West Valley City, Utah - Three skaters notched multiple points and goaltender Steve Silverthorn made 25 saves to record his second straight shutout, as the Steelheads blanked the Utah Grizzlies 5-0 at the E-Center on Wednesday night.

The Steelheads (21-16-1-1) have now won four of their last six games, while Silverthorn is currently riding a 123-minute scoreless streak, having pitched back-to-back shutouts. Meanwhile, the loss snaps the Grizzlies (14-23-1-2) season-high, five-game winning streak.

Just 14 seconds into the opening period, Greg Rallo put the Steelheads in front 1-0, as he tipped Kory Scoran's right point shot past Grizzlies' goaltender Sean Fields (12 saves). Rallo's 13th of the season was the fastest goal to start a road game this season for the Steelheads and his second game-winner of the year. Marty Flichel got the second assist, moving his scoring streak to seven straight outings.

Then at 10:11 of the frame, Flichel snapped a shot from just inside the blue line that deflected off defenseman Kyle Peto and past Fields to make the score 2-0. Rallo also assisted the power play goal, as he extended his consecutive game assist streak to five games.

With only 13 seconds to go in the first period, the Steelheads would take a commanding 3-0 lead on Taggart Desmet's fourth of the season. Grizzlies' forward Travis Rycroft skated the puck out of his defensive zone and attempted to send a pass that hit one of the linesmen just outside the Grizzlies blue line and caromed free for Desmet. The rookie from Michigan Tech University moved into the zone and looked off a couple of his teammates before ripping a shot over Fields for his fourth of the season.

The Steelheads padded their lead with two more tallies in the second period. At 2:55, Flichel peeled away from the left circles, wheeled into the high slot and fired a shot over the head of Fields for his 19th goal. Shields and Rallo got the helpers. Just under three minutes later, the visitors made it 5-0 on Desmet's second of the night. Steelheads' defenseman Blake Forsyth kept the puck inside the offensive zone and muscled a shot through traffic where Desmet got it past Fields for the second two-goal effort of his professional career. Scott Burt also got an assist, his first point in the last 13 games. That goal signaled the end of Fields night, as he was replaced by Rob McVicar (12 saves).

Through two periods, the shots favored the Steelheads 20-18 and they led 5-0.

There was no scoring in the third period and the Steelheads out-shot the Grizzlies 29-25 for the contest. The Steelheads power play finished two-for-five, while the Grizzlies ended zero-for-five.

The Steelheads continue their five-game road trip beginning on Friday, January 25 against the Las Vegas Wranglers. Face-off is at 8:05p.m. MST. Don't forget, Steelheads' single-game tickets can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the all-new, print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
