Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (January 24, 2007) - Trenton could not hold onto two, three-goal leads as the Johnstown Chiefs came storming back to defeat the Titans 5-4 in the shootout in front of 2,353 at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
Bolstered by the insertion of goaltender Morgan Cey for the third period, the Chiefs - down 4-2 - cut the Titans' lead to just one goal at 4:04 when Doug Andress took Jean Desrochers' face-off win and beat a screened Joel Martin with a slapshot from the point.
Johnstown tied the game over three minutes later s John Adams stickhandled through traffic before finding Dmitri Tarabrin in front for his second goal of the contest. Cey would deny the Titans on all 7 shots he faced through the third period and overtime and stop 7-of-9 in the shootout.
In his first shootout attempt of the season, Chiefs' defenseman P.J. Atherton clinched the victory scoring in the bottom half of round nine.
Up two goals in the second period the Titans pushed their lead to 3-0 at 8:41 when Mike Manley fended off Desrochers and stuffed a wraparound shot past the leg pad of Ryan Munce.
The end of the second stanza saw a flurry of action as Johnstown got on the board with 3:20 remaining when Andrew Martens batted Ben Wallace's rebound into the open net. Troy Riddle helped Trenton respond forty-three seconds later as he went coast-to-coast with Jim Henkel before firing his thirteenth goal of the season in the top corner.
The Chiefs would then head into locker room down 4-2 as Trenton failed to clear the zone and Desroschers found Tarabrin alone by the far post at 19:18 of the period.
Joel Martin's record went to 10-9-1 on the season as he made 30 saves through the extra session and 6-of-9 in the shootout.
The Titans went 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
