Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads (23-14-5) couldn't harness their Spidey Senses enough to get around the Tulsa Oilers (18-23-4) in a 3-1 loss on Saturday night from CenturyLink Arena in front of 5,303 fans, the eighth sellout of the season.
For the first time this week, one team scored in the first period starting at just 0:34. Oilers forward Danny Moynihan won a draw to defenseman Charlie Granath, and his shot from the left point fluttered under the crossbar to edge ahead, 1-0.
Through the rest of the first period and into the middle frame, the Steelheads controlled the pacing and offensive opportunities, and late in the second period they were finally rewarded. Precision passing led a chance from Steelheads forward Colby McAuley to find forward Will Merchant posted in front of the net to tie the game, 1-1, at 19:36 while on the power play.
The Oilers re-gained the scoring edge later in the third period at 14:04 on a 2-on-1 finished by forward Jacob Benson to take the 2-1 lead. A late double-minor penalty against the Steelheads led to Oilers forward Robbie Jackson deflecting a net front shot at 19:21, effectively sealing off the game at 3-1.
Oilers netminder Olle Eriksson Ek (7-9-2) stopped 34 of 35 shots in the win, while Steelheads goaltender Tomas Sholl (17-6-4) turned away 14 of 17 shots in the loss.
The Steelheads open a four-game road trip on Monday, Jan. 20 for a 1:10 p.m. puck drop against the Utah Grizzlies from Maverik Center. Coverage begins at 12:45 p.m. on 1350 KTIK-AM "The Ticket" and ECHL.tv.
The Steelheads return to CenturyLink Arena on Friday, Jan. 31 against the Rapid City Rush to open a four-game home stretch.
