Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads are teaming up with the nonprofit organization, First Book, during the game on Wednesday, January 30th to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their own books.

Fans are asked to bring either a preschool-aged book to the game or make a cash donation at the game to help First Book Treasure Valley get books into the hands of children who would otherwise not have one.

"Most of us grow up with plenty of books around the house and take them for granted," said Steelheads Head Coach Derek Laxdal. "It's very surprising and sad to hear statistics about how many children right here in the Treasure Valley do not have the privilege of owning a book. Let's do what we can to help."

There is only one book available for every 300 children in low-income areas and 61% of low-income families have no books at all for their children. 90 million Americans lack basic literacy skills. - First Book

First Book Treasure Valley, which is 100% volunteer-run, has given more than 1,000 books to children across the Valley and hope to increase that number. Nationwide, First Book has given out more than 45 million books.

The Steelheads will give a 2-for-1 coupon to fans who make a donation at Wednesday's game. In addition, a raffle will be held and a lucky fan could win an Executive Suite to a future Steelheads game.

Tickets for the game can be purchased via www.idahosteelheads.com (using the print-at-home feature), by calling 331-TIXS or from the Qwest Arena box office.
