CINCINNATI, OH - Sean Collins scored twice, including on a penalty shot in the third period, but it was not enough as the Wheeling Nailers (13-13-2-3=31) fell 4-3 in a shootout to the Cincinnati Cyclones (27-8-12=57) Friday night at US Bank Arena.

Special teams controlled the game as the two teams combined for four power-play goals, a shorthanded goal and the penalty shot tally. Wheeling finished the game 1-for-2 on the man-advantage while Cincinnati was 3-for-5.

Collins notched his first of the game and eighth of the year just 4:48 into the first period. On the power play, Kevin Croxton fed Jon D'Aversa at the right point. His shot was blocked before it got to the goal and Collins was able to backhand it home to put Wheeling up 1-0.

Wheeling expanded their lead to 2-0 with Justin Chwedoruk's fourth goal as a Nailer. He stole the puck away and slid it through the legs of Dov Grumet-Morris shorthanded at 17:56 of the first. The cushion didn't last long as Cincinnati responded a mere 25 seconds later. Matt Syroczynski redirected a David Desharnais shot past Curtis Darling at 18:21 to make it 2-1.

Syroczynski added his 13th of the year at 13:55 of the second, tying the game at two. Thomas Beauregard fed him in the slot and he caught Darling out of the goal for his second of the game.

The Cyclones took their first lead of the game at 16:31 of the second on Cory Urquhart power-play goal. His slap shot from the blue line avoided the traffic in front of Darling and found the back of the net.

The Nailers had their fair share of chances to tie the game but none were better than Collins on a breakaway late in the third. He was pulled down and awarded a penalty shot with 6:53 left in regulation. Collins buried his chance over the glove of Grumet-Morris. It was the first penalty shot goal of the season in two chances for the Nailers.

In the shootout Urquhart, Desharnais and Deitsch all scored for Cincinnati while Joe Guenther scored the lone goal of the shootout for Wheeling.

The two teams will rematch on Saturday in Wheeling at 8p.m. Tickets are BUY-ONE-GET-ONE FREE. Visit www.wheelingnailers.com for a coupon for tickets. The game will be televised live on WTOV9. Call 304-234-GOAL for more information.
