Texas Stars News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas - The Texas Stars rallied back from a three-goal deficit, but a pair of third period goals was the difference for the Stockton Heat as they skated away with a 5-3 win on Saturday night in front of 4,350 at Cedar Park Center.
Branden Troock finished with a goal and an assist for the Stars (8-4-0-1) and Stephen Johns tallied a pair of assists. Blair Riley was credited with the game-winning goal midway through the third after the Stars erased a 3-0 deficit in the game.
Texas hits the road Sunday for a 4 p.m. game against San Antonio.
The Heat (3-5-0-2) opened the scoring on a two-on-one, Garnet Hathaway goal with help from Jakub Nakladal and Markus Granlund at 4:50 of the first. Stockton then extended its lead to 2-0 on a scramble in front of the net as Austin Carroll stuffed the puck past Campbell with 10:38 to play, and Turner Elson added a short-handed goal with two minutes remaining for a three-goal Stockton lead.
The Stars went to work in the second on a comeback effort as Branden Troock hammered home his third goal of the season from the high slot with assists coming from Esa Lindell and Johns at 8:27. Gemel Smith seized his fourth goal of the year off his own rebound with help from Troock and Derek Hulak at 14:16, and the Stars began to turn the game around by outshooting Stockton, 15-6, in the middle frame.
Just over three minutes into the third, Johns flicked a pass directly in front of Cory Kane who lit the lamp on a breakaway to even the score for Texas, but Riley tipped in a Drew Shore shot with 5:06 to play to push the Heat back in front, 4-3.
Turner Elson added an empty-net goal in the game's final seconds.
Texas finished 0-for-9 on the power play. Stockton went 0-for-3.
Campbell stopped 29 of 33 shots in the loss. Poulin finished with 31 saves.
The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center.
