Monsters Sweep Griffins with 5-1 Win
November 14, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - In front of 10,245 fans at The Q, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters raced past the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday by a final score of 5-1. With the win, the Monsters improved to 8-3-0-2 overall this season and with a .692 points percentage, pulled into a tie for second place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
The Monsters stormed to a 3-0 lead on Saturday thanks to back-to-back-to-back even-strength scores from Sonny Milano at 5:05, assisted by Andrew Bodnarchuk and Jaime Sifers, Josh Anderson at 11:49, assisted by T.J. Tynan and Ryan Craig, and Craig himself at 18:08, set up by Alex Broadhurst and Michael Chaput.
In the second, Anderson and the Monsters picked up right where they left off as the Lake Erie winger potted his second score of the game at 6:14, an even-strength tally assisted by Tynan that made it 4-0. With time winding down in the middle frame, Monsters winger Daniel Zaar sped across the Griffins' blue line and fired a shot that, as time expired in the period, sailed past Grand Rapids goaltender Tom McCollum to extend Lake Erie's lead to 5-0 through 40 minutes of play.
The Griffins spoiled Monsters goaltender Joonas Korpisalo's shutout bid with a Colin Campbell goal at 3:08 of the third, but couldn't again solve Lake Erie's backstop en route to a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Monsters. Korpisalo's 37-save performance pushed his record to 3-1-2 this season while McCollum took the loss despite making 25 stops.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Friday road clash vs. the Iowa Wild with full coverage from Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA underway at 8:00 pm on 1420 The Answer and the Monsters Hockey Network.
