New Franchise Winning Streak as Pens Beat Amerks, 3-1
November 14, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - At 7:05 p.m., the 2015-16 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were just another team in the franchise's 17-year history. Sixty minutes of game time later, they became a new highlight in the team record books.
With a 3-1 win over the Rochester Americans on Saturday night, the Penguins won their 10th straight game, setting a new franchise record for consecutive victories in a season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton improved to 11-1-0-0 on the season with the win, but the historical significance of the new streak was downplayed by the Penguins after the game.
"No," Sullivan simply said when asked if he had any thoughts on the record set by his team. "We want to win each game as it comes. This group is hungry for wins, and we're hungry to get points. We'll approach tomorrow the just like we approached today: We'll be hungry for a win."
That Penguins hunger was on display throughout the game, as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton blasted 42 shots on goal in the game and only surrendered 16. Americans goalie Andrey Makarov weathered an early storm whipped up by the Penguins, stopping all 16 shots he saw in the opening 20 minutes.
Jean-Sébastien Dea opened the scoring at 7:24 of the second period, floating a shot over the glove hand of Makarov.
David Warsofsky netted his second goal of the season with a power play tally assisted by Dominik Simon and Will O'Neill to put the Penguins up 2-0 at 15:36 of the third.
Simon's assist put him ahead of Scott Wilson for the team lead in points with 13 (5G-8A).
Rochester's leading scorer, Phil Varone, spoiled Tristan Jarry's shutout bid with a breakaway goal with only 19 seconds remaining in the third period.
Oskar Sundqvist quickly reestablished his team's two-goal lead with a diving effort to steer a puck into the Americans' empty net from center ice just seven seconds after Varone's tally. Sundqvist's empty netter made the score 3-1, exactly where it would stand 12 seconds later when time expired and the Penguins had the new winning streak record secure.
The Penguins finished the game one-for-six on the power play. Saturday night's game marked the fourth game in a row that Wilkes-Barre/Scranton converted on at least one of its man advantage opportunities.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's all-time winning streak record over the course of overlapping seasons was also tied tonight at 10 games, as was the team mark for consecutive home wins (eight).
The Penguins have the opportunity to add on to their winning streak and increase their lead on the Atlantic Division Sunday evening as they head to Hartford to take on the Wolf Pack. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hartford last met on Oct. 30, and the Penguins skated away with a 4-1 victory. Puck drop between the Pens and Pack is schedule for 4:00 p.m. at XL Center in Hartford, Conn.
