Stanley Cup returning to Greenville
November 1, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Grrrowl News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - The Greenville Grrrowl announced today that the Stanley Cup will return to the BI-LO Center on December 17th as the Grrrowl host the South Carolina Stingrays at 7:05 p.m. The Stanley Cup was last at the BI-LO Center when the Grrrowl hosted the ECHL All-Star game in 2000.
The Stanley Cup began touring the cities of 20 ECHL teams on October 26th to help raise money for hurricane relief efforts.
All proceeds will benefit charities assisting in hurricane relief efforts including, but not limited to, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and United Way. This tour is another addition to the National Hockey League's charitable efforts, which have included a joint donation with the NHL Players' Association of $1 million to the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina relief.
"I would like to thank Commissioner Gary Bettman and the National Hockey League, the NHL Players' Association and the Hockey Hall of Fame for their role in raising the level of awareness and assistance for people in both Mississippi and Southeast Texas, two ECHL markets hard hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We encourage fans in all participating cities to come see professional sport's most famous trophy and help in fundraising at the same time," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna.
Hockey's most famous trophy will be the center of various activities throughout the tour, including media appearances and private showings. The "Keeper of the Cup" from the Hockey Hall of Fame also will be available to answer questions and talk about the history of hockey. Fans will have the opportunity to have their photograph taken with the Stanley Cup and make a monetary donation towards hurricane relief.
The Stanley Cup will make several stops around Greenville upon its arrival, with details of its appearance schedule to follow in the coming weeks.
