MANCHESTER, NH - A penalty-driven game ended with the Manchester Monarchs falling to the Worcester Sharks, 3-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (7-5-1-1) is ranked second in the Atlantic Division with 16 points. Worcester (6-3-1-2) is in third place in the Atlantic Division with 15 points.

"We didn't manage the puck and it cost us," explained Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris after Friday evening's loss to Worcester. "We have to do a better job taking care of the puck. When you outshoot [your opponent] like that, you have to produce."

Right wing Benn Ferreiro's second period tally put the Sharks up 2-0 and served as the eventual game-winning goal. Ferreiro crossed the Monarchs blueline on a breakaway and streaked down the right wing toward the net. At the bottom of the right wing circle, Ferreiro snapped a wrist shot that beat Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff top shelf at 13:28 of the second period. Ferreiro's eighth goal of the season was assisted by defenseman Sean Sullivan and right wing Jonathan Cheechoo on the power play.

Sullivan recorded his third goal of the season with a one-timer from the high slot at 9:17 of the second period to give the Sharks a 1-0 advantage. Crossing over the Monarchs blueline, left wing Brandon Mashinter passed the puck to right wing Dan DaSilva who carried it behind Zatkoff's cage. DaSilva fed a pass to Sullivan in the high slot for the first goal of the game.

Defenseman Alec Martinez scored his fourth goal of the season, a power play goal, at 2:23 of the third period to bring the Monarchs to within one goal. Center Justin Azevedo passed the puck from behind the Sharks net to left wing Bud Holloway who found Martinez streaking through the slot. The defenseman ripped a wrist shot past goaltender Alex Stalock to put the Monarchs on the scoreboard.

Ferreiro tallied his second goal of the evening and his ninth goal in 10 games at 15:20 of the third period. Left wing T.J. Trevelyan skated up the left wing and passed the puck to Cheechoo in the slot. Cheechoo snapped a wrist shot toward the net that was initially blocked by Zatkoff. The ensuing rebound was put home by Ferreiro on the right doorstep to give the Sharks the 3-1 lead.

Zatkoff (4-5-1) took his fifth loss of the season with 16 saves on 19 shots. Stalock (5-4-1) earned his fifth win of the season, stopping 37-of-38 shots on goal.

Manchester was 1-for-9 on the power play. Worcester was 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
