Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - The Albany Devils hit four posts and witnessed two power-play goals against in a 3-0 loss to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday at the Times Union Center in front of 4,235 fans. Jeff Frazee made 16 saves as the Devils go to 6-7-0-0 on the year. The Crunch improve to 6-4-1-2 on the year.
"Early on in the season you want to win for your fans," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "That's the toughest part about it; hopefully, we continue to play like we have on the road and maybe it shakes us out of this thing."
Syracuse struck twice on a five-on-three power- play at the end of the first period and at the start of the second. Matt Beleskey scored first with a one-timer from the high slot off a blocked shot. The assists went to Dan Sexton and Danny Syvret with just five seconds remaining in the opening frame.
After the break, Nicholas Deschamps made it 2-0 down low, going five-hole on Frazee at 1:07. Sexton picked up his second assist of the game and Trevor Smith earned the secondary helper.
"Five-on-threes are tough to kill," said Tim Sestito. "You can disagree with the penalties or not, but we still got them. We block a shot in the slot and it came right to their guy and he scored. Then again, our penalty kill didn't get the job done. The game came down to two goals on the power play for them and we got skunked on ours. Some games are going to be special team's battles."
Sexton completed his three-point night with a goal to make it 3-0 at 7:44 of the third period. The goal, which originated from just inside the top of the right face-off circle, was assisted by Beleskey and Smith.
Albany pressured in the first and well into the second with Myles Stoesz, Tyler Eckford, Michael Swift and Nick Palmieri all finding iron at one time or another.
"You hit four pipes - dead square on," Sestito said. "Sometimes they go in and tonight they didn't."
Crunch netminder Jean-Philippe Levasseur didn't allow a puck over the goal line as he made 23 saves for his second win of the season.
Frazee, who was playing in his third-straight game, stopped nine in the first, four in the second and three in the third.
The Devils travel to Portland on Saturday, Nov. 13 for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
