P-Bruins Burned by Heat 5-2

Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins fell to the Abbotsford Heat 5-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of a crowd of 9,101 fans. The P-Bruins received goals from rookies Matt Bartkowski, the first of his professional career, and Yury Alexandrov.

The first period started off slow offensively for both teams, but Abbotsford was sent to the box early at the 0:52 mark when Gord Baldwin was charged with interference after responding to a clean open-ice hit from Steve Kampfer. The play went back and forth until the 18:37 mark when rookie Matt Bartkowski ripped a shot past Leland Irving from the left circle for his first goal. Jordan Knackstedt and Zach Hamill picked up the assists on the play. The lead didn't last long however, as Abbotsford's Andrew Carroll put a bouncing puck past Nolan Schaefer at the 19:51 mark to send the teams into the locker room tied at one. Carter Bancks and Matt Keith got the helpers on the play.

Providence came out flying in the second period, but was unable to connect in the offensive zone. P-Bruins centerman Jamie Arniel created multiple opportunities in front, but Providence couldn't find the rebounds. Abbotsford took control offensively at the 12:01 mark when Schaefer was able to block the initial attempt from T.J. Brodie, but Bryan Cameron beat him on the rebound. Greg Nemisz continued the scoring at the 16:00 mark to make it 3-1. Lance Bouma and Gaelan Patterson collected the assists on the play. With frustration rising on the P-Bruins' bench, rookie Antoine Roussel landed multiple rights on Josh Meyers in an compelling decision in front of Providence's bench. Both players were sent to the locker room with five minutes for fighting. Roussel collected a roughing call on the play as well, putting Providence on the penalty kill for the second time in the contest. Abbotsford took advantage at 18:23, when Quintin Laing beat Schaefer for the power play goal. Brodie and Keith Seabrook picked up the assists.

Providence continued its offensive momentum, but was unable to connect until Joe Colborne won a face-off back to the rookie Alexandrov, who sent a cannon of a shot past a blank Irving at the 5:19 mark. Just seconds later, Providence was robbed of a goal when a Jeremy Reich shot hit the inside post and bounced out. Despite the call, Providence kept the momentum and had opportunities from Arniel and Knackstedt, but couldn't find the back of the net. Schaefer was pulled with just under two minutes to go, giving the P-Bruins a six-on-five man-advantage. However, Keith found the empty net to make it 5-2 with 47 seconds remaining in the contest.

Schaefer suffered the loss, blocking 37 of 41 attempts, while Irving stopped 19 shots. Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.

The P-Bruins are on the road in New Hampshire on Saturday, taking on the Manchester Monarchs at 7 p.m. The weekend wraps up on Sunday as Providence hosts Abbotsford at 4:05 p.m. for Thundersticks Night with thundersticks free to the first 1,000 kids age 12 and under.
