Norfolk Admirals News Release
GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - After Paul Szczechura had scored a late goal to give Norfolk a 3-2 lead, Denis Hamel scored two power play goals - the game-tying goal with 1:55 to go in regulation and the game-winning goal 2:50 into overtime - as the Norfolk Admirals (7-3-2-1) fell to the Adirondack Phantoms (3-11-1-0), 4-3, on Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Admirals fell to 1-0-1-0 on their five-game road trip, which continues tomorrow night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7:00 p.m.
The Admirals took a 1-0 lead on Mike Vernace's first goal as an Admiral 9:44 into the game. Vernace attempted a pass from the right circle that deflected off traffic in the low slot and went behind the net. Vernace followed the puck behind the net and sent a backhand wraparound shot past the right leg of Phantoms netminder Johan Backlund for a power play goal.
Adirondack tied the game at 1-1 just under four minutes later. Ben Holmstrom found a rebound in the slot and slid a shot past the right leg of Norfolk netminder Cedrick Desjardins at 13:42.
The Phantoms took a 2-1 lead 5:39 into the second period. Joonas Lehtivuori sent an outlet pass from the Adirondack blue line to Eric Wellwood at the Norfolk blueline. Wellwood broke in alone on Desjardins and sent a shot over the right shoulder of the Admirals goaltender.
Norfolk tied the game at 2-2 less than four minutes later on Chris Durno's fourth goal of the season. Mike Angelidis won a battle for the puck in the left corner and centered the puck to Durno in the left faceoff circle. Durno sent a shot between the legs of Backlund at 9:11.
Paul Szczechura put Norfolk on top 3-2 with a power play goal with only 5:14 remaining in regulation. Matt Fornataro spotted Szczechura with a pass as he crossed the Adirondack blue line. Szczechura fired a wrist shot from the slot that beat the glove of Backlund for his seventh goal of the season.
However, the Phantoms tied the game at 3-3 with 1:55 remaining in regulation on a power play goal of their own. Denis Hamel found a rebound in the slot and quickly fired it past the right leg of Desjardins and into the net.
Szczechura was whistled for tripping 2:38 into overtime, and Hamel scored the game-winning goal on the subsequent power play. Erik Gustafsson sent a feed to Hamel in the right circle and Hamel sent a one-timer past Desjardins 2:50 into overtime to give Adirondack the 4-3 win.
Cedrick Desjardins (19 shots, 15 saves) was saddled with the loss. Johan Backlund (23 shots, 20 saves) earned the win.
Norfolk was 2-4 on the power play. Adirondack was 2-7.
