Laval Rocket News Release
TORONTO (March 28, 2018) - A multi-point night from Timothy Liljegren and Jeremy Bracco as well as a 38 save performance from Garret Sparks lead the Toronto Marlies to a 5-1 victory over the Laval Rocket at Ricoh Coliseum Wednesday night.
Sylvain Lefebvre's troops found the back of the net before the first place overall Marlies did, as Chris Terry tied Lehigh Valley's Phil Varone for the league scoring title with his 28th goal and 65th point of the season. Adam Cracknell won a faceoff cleanly to Matt Taormina on the power play, who passed it to Terry for the one-timer goal from the point. Not only did Terry tie Varone on the goal which was scored just five seconds into the power play, but Taormina's assist moved him into second place overall for points by a defenseman with 48.
Charlie Lindgren, who made 26 saves in the loss, flashed the leather multiple times throughout the first two periods but was ultimately beat by the Toronto power play in the final minutes of the first. The Marlies would go on to add two more goals in the second, of which one was on the power play, to give themselves a 3-1 lead to start the final frame. Although they did not add any goals of their own in the second, the Rocket outshot their divisional opponent 15-6 in the period and their power play came close to striking for the second time as Taormina's shot from the point created some trouble for Sparks and Terry ripped a puck off the post.
Despite Laval's best efforts, Andreas Borgman added a fourth goal for the Marlies a little more than halfway through the third and Ben Smith put his 26th of the year into the empty Laval net to bring the score up to 5-1.
The Rocket have two more games on this road trip on Wednesday against the Binghamton Devils as well as on Friday against the Hershey Bears before they will return home to play the Rochester Americans on April 4.
