LEWISTON, Maine - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers defeated the Portland Pirates in a shootout Friday by a final score of 4-3. Ryan Strome tied the score with less than 20 seconds to play to tie the score, while Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Mike Cornell scored second-period goals for the Sound Tigers. Bouchard and Alan Quine each scored in the shootout to earn the extra point for the Sound Tigers. Parker Milner got the win after making 31 saves on the night.
Strome's goal came with the extra attacker on for the Sound Tigers. After receiving a pass from Scott Mayfield, Strome made his way into the high slot before unleashing a wrist shot that beat Pirates goaltender Mark Visentin. It was Strome's 10th of the season and tied the score at three late in the third period.
Back in the first period, however, the Pirates struck first on Brandon Gormley's first of two goals on the night. The defenseman had the puck at the point and blasted a shot through traffic to make the score 1-0. Gormley's goal came on the power play, as did all of Portland's goals.
The Sound Tigers entered the second period trailing by a goal, but scored two in less than 1:30 to take the lead. First, with the Sound Tigers on the power play, Bouchard took a pass from Ryan Strome and found the top corner to tie the score at 4:38 of the second. Then, at 6:07, Cornell found the back of the net on a shot from the point after taking a pass from Dallas Jackson.
The Sound Tigers led 2-1, but two more power-play goals from Portland in the second period gave them the lead after 40 minutes. Gormley scored his second on another shot from the point, while Tobias Rieder scored from in close with less than 15 seconds to play in the second.
The Pirates held on to that lead for nearly the entire third period, but Strome's goal came with 17.9 to play, after a period that had been dominated by the Sound Tigers. They outshot the Pirates by a 14-6 margin in the third as the teams skated 4-on-4 in overtime.
Neither team scored in the extra frame, and Milner stopped four of five Pirates skaters in the shootout to earn the win. The Sound Tigers play the Springfield Falcons on the road Saturday before returning to Webster Bank Arena to host the Syracuse Crunch Sunday at 5 p.m.
