Rampage Can't Solve Iowa, Fall in Shootout 5-4

SAN ANTONIO - Though they have a league leading seven shootout wins, the San Antonio Rampage (15-21-1-4) fell to the Iowa Wild (18-16-3-3) 5-4 tonight in the skills competition. Three of the four Rampage shootout losses on the year have come at the hands of the Wild.

Wade Megan opened the scoring for the Rampage 4:45 into the first, while defenseman Colby Robak added his fifth of the year in the second period, recording his 100th career American Hockey League point with the tally. Rampage newcomer Ryan Martindale scored his first in the silver and black, and John McFarland added the final tally in the loss. Logan Shaw and Quinton Howden each have two points in their last two games with assists on McFarland's third of the season.

Net-minder Jacob Markstrom stopped 21-of-25 in regulation, and 4-of-6 in the shootout.

Given an early power play, the Wild did not waste any time, opening the scoring just six seconds into their extra man opportunity. Marc Hagel picked up the puck from Steven Kampfer, slipping it past Markstrom to make it 1-0 at the 3:14 mark of the first.

The Rampage would not be held under long, as a failed Iowa clear proved to be bountiful for the Silver and Black. Megan intercepted the clear attempt, ripping one from the bottom of the right circle to knot it at 1-1 1:31 after Hagel's tally.

Megan's fifth of the year was unassisted.

Carson McMillan beat Markstrom to make it 2-1 for his ninth of the year just over two minutes later at 6:57 carrying the teams into the first intermission.

After a slow second for both teams, the Wild and Rampage exploded for three goals in 1:28 to close out the middle frame. Robak started the onslaught, catching a pass from Ryan Whitney and firing a shot past Iowa net-minder Johan Gustafsson to knot the game at 2-2.

Just 51 seconds later, Jonathon Blum once again gave his team the go-ahead goal, netting his fifth of the year on the power play. But with 23 seconds remaining in the second, Martindale streaked into the zone and rocketed one from the high slot at 19:37 to tie up the contest at 3-3.

Just 3:31 into the final period, McFarland raced down the half boards and released the puck at the bottom of the right circle to give the Rampage their first lead of the game at 4-3. Iowa's Mickey Lang tied it up for the fourth time at the 9:42 mark, roofing one over Markstrom's shoulder and in, effectively sending the teams into overtime.

For the third time in the last four games, the Rampage would decide it in a shootout. Bobby Butler was the lone Rampage goal-scorer in the skills competition, and goals from Zack Phillips and Jake Dowell would ice it in the Wild's favor, 5-4.

The Rampage went 0-for-6 with the extra man, while Iowa converted twice, going 2-for-4. The Silver and Black outshot the Wild 39-26.

The Rampage will face off against the Wild again tomorrow night on a Magic 105 $1 Hot Dog and Popcorn Night at the AT&T Center. They will host the 2013 Calder Cup Champion Grand Rapid Griffins the next day, for the first Express-News Sunday Funday of the new year.
