San Antonio, TX - The Iowa Wild (18-16-3-3, 42 points) defeated the San Antonio Rampage (15-21-1-4, 35 points) 5-4 in a shootout in front of 8,079 fans at AT&T Center on Friday night. Captain Jake Dowell scored in the sixth round of a sudden-death shootout and goalie Johan Gustafsson stopped San Antonio's last four attempts to help Iowa take two points on the road. Defenseman Brian Connelly (2a), as well as forwards Carson McMillan (1g-1a) and Raphael Bussieres (2a) each had two points, as Iowa extended its current points streak to five-games (3-0-1-1). Gustafsson (8-7-2) stopped 35 of 39 in regulation and five of six attempts in the shootout win. Defenseman Jonathon Blum, forwards Mickey Lang and Marc Hagel also scored, as the Wild improved to 9-5-1-3 on the road this season. San Antonio goalie Jacob Markstrom (7-9-2) stopped 21 of 25 in regulation and four of six attempts in the shootout loss. Iowa plays again in San Antonio at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday night.
The two teams combined for three goals in the first seven minutes of the first period. Iowa started the scoring at 3:14 with a power-play goal by Marc Hagel. Wild defenseman Brain Connelly worked the puck cross-ice to defenseman Steven Kampfer at the right point. Kampfer sent the puck to the Rampage net, where goalie Jacob Markstrom made the initial save. Wild forward Marc Hagel scooped up the rebound and backhanded the puck past Markstrom for his third goal of the year and a 1-0 Iowa lead. The Rampage countered off a turnover in the Wild zone at 4:45. Forward Wade Megan scored unassisted off a loose puck in the slot, beating Johan Gustafsson with a wrist shot for his fifth goal of the year and a 1-1 tie. Iowa regained the lead after Carson McMillan picked off a pass at the Rampage blueline and carried the puck towards the San Antonio crease. McMillan made a move and slipped the puck between the legs of Markstrom for his ninth goal of the year and a 2-1 lead at 6:57 of the first period.
The two teams skated scoreless for the first 18 minutes of the middle period. San Antonio connected for a tally just after a power play expired at 18:09, as Colby Robak blistered one past Gustafsson for the 2-2 tie. Defenseman Ryan Whitney and forward Vincent Trocheck each picked up an assist on Robak's fifth goal of the year. Iowa countered 51 seconds later with a power-play goal by defenseman Jonathon Blum. Connelly and forward Raphael Bussieres worked the puck to the point for Blum, who snapped his fifth goal of the season in from the blueline for the 3-2 Iowa lead. The Rampage countered prior to the period expiring with Ryan Martindale's fourth goal of the season at 19:37. Martindale fired a shot from just inside the Iowa blueline, tying the game 3-3. Forwards Jed Ortmeyer and Greg Rallo each had an assist on the tally.
In the third period, Rampage forward John McFarland beat Gustafsson on the stickside just 3:31 into the final frame. McFarland's third goal of the year was set up by Quinton Howden and Logan Shaw, pushing the Rampage in front 4-3. Iowa bounced back, tying the game 4-4 at 9:42 of the third period. Making his Iowa debut, forward Mickey Lang rifled home a rebound for his first AHL goal. McMillan and Bussieres each had an assist on Lang's first goal of the season.
The two teams remained tied 4-4 after the third period and through overtime before heading to a shootout. Jake Dowell and Zack Phillips each scored in the shootout for Iowa. Rampage forward Bobby Butler scored his club's lone shootout goal.
