St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps knocked off the Providence Bruins 5-4 Friday night in the first of two meetings this weekend between the teams at Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence.
Michael Hutchinson, starting his second straight game, made 32 saves for his second consecutive win, while Carl Klingberg and Jerome Samson scored two goals apiece.
Craig Cunningham notched a pair of goals for the Bruins in a losing cause.
In the opening frame, Klingberg got the IceCaps on the board first with his 12th of the season, beating Niklas Svedberg 3:36 into the first to give the IceCaps a 1-0 lead.
With less than a minute left in the opening stanza, the IceCaps extended their lead to two on Jerome Samson's 12th of the season. Samson snapped a shot under the crossbar to give the IceCaps a 2-0 lead.
Just 2:26 into the second, Austen Brassard stretched the lead to 3-0. Blair Riley sent a perfect feed in front to Brassard, who made no mistake for his second of the season to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
Just 17 seconds later, St. John's extended its lead to four on Klingberg's second of the game. Klingberg burst in on goal and beat Svedberg for his 13th of the season to extend the IceCaps lead to 4-0.
Providence got on the board late in the second frame on a goal by Cunningham. The Bruins' winger snapped a shot from the slot that beat Hutchinson to narrow the lead to 4-1.
Providence cut the lead in half later in the frame on a point shot that was deflected in front by Andrew Cherniwchan to make it 4-2.
The Bruins narrowed the gap to one on a goal by Jared Knight, who hammered a shot past Hutchinson early in the third period to make it a 4-3 score.
However, Samson restored the IceCaps lead back to two later in the third frame. The IceCaps winger received the puck near the blue line and wired a shot past Bruins netminder Svedberg to make it 5-3 IceCaps.
Cunningham bulged the twine with just 0.4 seconds left in regulation but it was too little, too late.
The IceCaps travel to Hartford Saturday to face the Wolf Pack in the second of three games this weekend.
