MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs defeated the Worcester Sharks, 2-1, at Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night.

Manchester (27-12-2-4) leads the Atlantic Division with 60 points. Worcester (19-16-3-1) is ranked fourth in the Atlantic Division with 42 points.

"I really liked our first period," said Monarchs Head Coach Mark Morris. "I thought we came out with a good focus and played pretty hard. We had a couple situations that were a little iffy defensively, but that was our best period far and away. The second period, I thought they took it to us. I think they outshot us 15-11 and we kind of sat back and then periodically in the third, we turned it up a bit, but credit them for hanging in there."

Monarchs right wing Zach O'Brien ripped home the second goal of the game to give the Monarchs the 2-0 advantage at 6:20 of the third period. Forward Nick Shore scooped the puck out of the corner, lifted his head up and passed it across the slot to a waiting O'Brien. Worcester goaltender Harri Sateri could not squeeze his pads tight enough as the puck slipped five-hole to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.

Right wing Brian O'Neill beat Sateri for the opening goal of the game. O'Brien won the puck battle in the left corner of the offensive zone, and then shoveled it over to Shore. With the goaltender charging the puck, Shore quickly fed a backhanded pass to O'Neill who dumped it into a wide open net to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead at 14:36 of the first period.

Worcester defenseman Matt Tennyson cuts the Monarchs lead in half with a power play goal at 11:46 of the third period. Center Freddie Hamilton cycled to puck behind the net to defenseman Dylan DeMelo. From the left trapezoid, DeMelo sauced a pass back to the left point where Tennyson riffled one past Monarchs goaltender J.F. Berube to cut the margin to 2-1.

Berube (16-12-2) earned his 16th win of the season stopping 32-of-33 shots. Sateri (11-14-1) took the loss, stopping 25 of the 27 shots he faced in the game.

Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Worcester went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
