Bridgeport Islanders News Release

THE WEEK THAT WAS...

The Sound Tigers traveled to Charlotte, NC for their first ever games against the Charlotte Checkers, new AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. The two-game series kicked off Thursday evening with the Checkers taking advantage of home ice, as Jacob Micflikier netted a hat-trick en route to a 6-1 win over the Sound Tigers. Friday's game looked as if it would be another easy win for Charlotte when the Checkers scored three times early in the first period, but the Sound Tigers were resilient. The team came back from three separate three-goal deficits to make the score 6-5 on Jeremy Colliton's power play goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation, but the Sound Tigers were unable to score the equalizer as Charlotte held on for the one-goal victory. The team returned home Saturday night for a tilt against the Norfolk Admirals, and Jesse Joensuu's goal early in the third period tied the game at two to send the game to overtime. With 10.3 seconds left in the extra session, Captain Mark Wotton found the loose puck in the Norfolk zone and fired a one-timer from the slot past Admirals netminder Dustin Tokarski for his first goal of the season to give Bridgeport a hard-fought 3-2 OT win.

CAPUANO NAMED ISLES' INTERIM HEAD COACH... The New York Islanders announced today that Bridgeport Sound Tigers Head Coach Jack Capuano has been named interim head coach, replacing Scott Gordon. Gordon will remain with the organization as an adviser to General Manager, Garth Snow. Capuano has served as the head coach the Bridgeport Sound Tigers the past four seasons. He will make his National Hockey League head coaching debut on Wednesday, Nov. 17 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The native of Cranston, RI, had a 133-100-8-14 career mark as head coach of the Sound Tigers. Capuano joined the New York Islanders organization in the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach with the Islanders. From 1997-2005 he served as the General Manager of the Pee Dee Pride of the East Coast Hockey League.

PAT BINGHAM NAMED SOUND TIGERS HEAD COACH... Following the promotion of Jack Capuano to the interim head coaching position of the New York Islanders, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers have named Pat Bingham as their new head coach, the team announced Monday. This marks Bingham's first stint as a head coach in the American Hockey League. The Vancouver, BC native joined the Islanders organization in 2005 as an assistant coach of the Sound Tigers. Bingham became head coach of the Fort Wayne Komets of the United Hockey League for the following season, then returned to the Sound Tigers where he has been an assistant coach since the 2007-08 season. Bingham has previous head coaching experience in the Central Hockey League, United Hockey League, and East Coast Hockey League. In his six combined seasons as a head coach, Bingham has lead each of those teams to a winning record, including a 51-17-4 mark with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL during the 2003-04 campaign where he won the ECHL Coach of the Year award. Over that six-season span, Bingham compiled an impressive 266-144-30 overall record.

REESE RECALLED BY ISLANDERS... The New York Islanders announced Monday that defenseman Dylan Reese has been recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. Reese, 26, is tied for the lead among Sound Tigers defensemen this season with six points (1 goal, 5 assists) in 15 games. The Pittsburgh, PA native made his National Hockey League debut with the Islanders last year in his third professional season, netting four points (two goals, two assists) in 19 games. After a four year collegiate career at Harvard University, Reese was drafted by the New York Rangers in the seventh round, 209th overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. The Islanders acquired the 6-1, 201-pound blue-liner in a trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets on March 1, 2010.

CAPTAIN CLUTCH... Although he is not known as a goal scorer, Sound Tigers Captain Mark Wotton has scored his goals in a timely fashion. The Foxwarren, MAN native has scored 20 goals in his franchise-record 312 games with the Sound Tigers, and four of them have been overtime game-winners. Prior to his heroics on Saturday, his last OT game-winner came almost exactly one year earlier on November 15, 2009 when he scored with 1.7 seconds left in OT to beat the Portland Pirates 5-4.

CAMPBELL INKS PTO WITH SOUND TIGERS... The Bridgeport Sound Tigers announced this morning that they have signed forward Trent Campbell to a professional tryout contract (PTO). Campbell comes to the Sound Tigers from the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL where he had one goal and four assists in eight games through the early portion of the 2010-11 season. The Beauval, SK native recorded over a point per game last year with the Stingrays (20g/48a in 60 games) and appeared in three games each with the Worcester Sharks and Houston Aeros of the AHL, scoring one goal in Worcester and notching one assist for Houston. Prior to his professional debut with South Carolina in the 2007-08 season, Campbell played his collegiate hockey at Lake Superior State University where he totaled 90 points (36g/54a) in 153 games.
