Bridgeport Islanders News Release
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 9, 2014) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers scored two goals in the opening minute of the third period Sunday and defeated the Adirondack Phantoms by a final score of 5-4. John Persson scored two goals while Ryan Strome, Mike Halmo and Matt Donovan all chipped in with one of their own. Anders Nilsson saw 31 shots and stopped 27 of them for his seventh win of the season.
Adirondack got on the board on the very first shift of the game after Kris Newbury took a feed from Jason Akeson and streaked up the middle for a breakaway. Newbury slipped it past Nilsson and gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead. Strome tied the game at the 5:46 mark when, with the teams 4-on-4, he came into the zone on the right wing. He got to the faceoff circle and snapped a wrist shot short-side on Heeter to made it a 1-1 game.
Adirondack regained the lead later in the period on a shot from the point by Bruno Gervais. Gervais wristed the puck from the right point, where it redirected off of at least two Phantoms players before finding the back of the net. Tye McGinn was credited with his 14th goal of the season.
Halmo tied the score at two in the second period on the Sound Tigers fourth shorthanded goal of the season. Chris Langkow stripped the puck from Akeson as he tried to break out of his own end. Langkow sent the puck to the slot for Halmo, whose wrist shot beat Phantoms goaltender Cal Heeter.
Persson's first goal came just more than two minutes later after Dallas Jackson found the puck at the left halfboards and wheeled it towards the net. After it bounced off a few different skates, Persson was credited the goal. Later in the second, Oliver Lauridsen took a slap shot from just outside the circle and beat Nilsson to tie the score at three.
The Sound Tigers opened the third period with plenty of jump and took a lead they did not relinquish with two quick goals. Donovan got his fourth of the season after he snuck down low to take a pass from Strome. He powered it home to beat Heeter and made it a 4-3 game. Just 29 seconds late, Strome broke into the zone on a 2-on-1. His shot hit the post, but Persson drove to the net and beat Heeter with the rebound.
Petr Straka scored for the Phantoms midway through the third to make it a one-goal came, but that was as close as Adriondack came to tying the score. The Sound Tigers are back in action Saturday against the Springfield Falcons and return home Sunday to host the Albany Devils.
