February 9, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utica Comets News Release
Nicklas Jensen's Natural Hat Trick in the second period wasn't enough for the Comets as Alex Broadhurt's four point (2-2-4) night paced the IceHogs to a 5-4 overtime victory over the Comets Sunday night at the BMO Harris Bank Center.
Nicklas Jensen (3-0-3), Patrick Mullen (0-2-2) and Henrik Tommernes (0-2-2) each had multi-point games as the Comets slipped to 18-22-3-4.
The IceHogs opened the game's scoring 14:27 into the game. Zach Miskovic forced a Comets turnover in the neutral zone that led to an IceHogs 2-on-1. Brandon Pirri streaked into the Comets zone and fired a wrist shot through Joacim Eriksson's legs for his fifth goal of the year. Alex Broadhurst and Miskovic recorded assists on the goal.
Alex Broadhurst picked up his second point of the night with a goal 2:56 into the second period. A Comets turnover during a breakout led to Terry Broadhurst finding his brother, Alex, who was alone in front. A quick shot from Broadhurst doubled the IceHogs lead to 2-0. Adam Clendening picked up the secondary assists.
The 2-0 lead did not last long as Darren Archibald put the Comets on the scoreboard 30 seconds later. Archibald found Brandon DeFazio below the goal line, and streaked to the front of the net. DeFazio slipped the puck back to Archibald who one-timed a shot past LaBarbera for his third goal in two games. Patrick Mullen was credited the secondary assist.
Two minutes later Jeremy Morin returned the IceHogs two-goal lead. A face-off in the Comets zone led to Brandon Mashinter digging out a tied up puck and found Jeremy Morin all alone at the top of the circle for a one-time blast that beat Eriksson glove side. Alex Broadhurst picked up his third point of the night with an assist on the play.
The high scoring second period was far from done there. Nicklas Jensen took a feed from Henrik Tommernes, and fired off a rocket of a wrist shot that beat LaBarbera to bring the score to 3-2. Jeremy Welsh extended his assist streak to three games with an assist on the play.
Just two minutes later Jensen was just getting heated up. Jensen tied the game up as he redirected a Tommernes blast from the point past LaBarbera for the Comets third goal of the game. Mullen notched his second point of the night with an assist on the goal.
A beautiful tic-tac-toe play set-up Jensen's magical the natural hat trick goal with 2:55 to play. On the power play Alexandre Grenier connected with Pascal Pelletier on a cross ice, behind-the-back pass. From there Pelletier one-touched a pass to Jensen who one-timed the puck into a wide open net.
With just 2:41 to play the IceHogs tied the game up with a power-play goal off of a Benn Ferriero faceoff violation penalty. Pirri banked a pass off the boards behind Eriksson's net to Garret Ross, who jammed home the game's tying goal.
Alex Broadhurst capped off his four-point night with the game-winning overtime goal. The Broadhurst brothers broke into the Comets zone on a 2-on-1, take the feed from Terry, Alex fired off a shot that beat Eriksson blocker side to end the game. Clendening added a second assist on the game winner.
The Comets converted on one of their four power play opportunities, while the IceHogs went two for seven.
The Comets head to the All-Star break winners of seven out of their last 11, and collected 18 out 22 possible points. The Comets four goal second period set a franchise record for most goals in a period.
The Comets are back in action Friday night in Rochester before returning the The AUD Saturday night against the Rochester Americans. Puck drop for both games are set for 7 pm.
