St. John's IceCaps News Release
ST. JOHN'S, NL - Needing to fend off a third-period near-comeback to come away with the win, the Worcester Sharks escaped on top to defeat the St. John's IceCaps 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Mile One Centre.
Travis Oleksuk, Rob Davison, Eriah Hayes, and Dan DaSilva had the goals for the Sharks, while Troy Grosenick turned aside 29 shots to backstop the win.
Blair Riley and Kael Mouillierat scored for St. John's, and Michael Hutchinson made 24 saves in a losing effort.
Oleksuk got the Sharks on the board first at 5:27 of the opening frame. Taking a behind-the-net feed from Rylan Schwartz, Oleksuk fired it into the wide-open cage to make it 1-0.
Worcester nearly added another just over two minutes later, when DaSilva marched out from the corner, made a move on Hutchinson, and backhanded a point-blank shot on goal. Hutchinson stood his ground, however, stoning the Worcester right-winger to keep the score at 1-0.
In the second period, Davison put the Sharks ahead by two at 14:57. Set up by James Livingston in the high slot, Davison one-timed his first of the season top shelf to the glove side on Hutchinson.
Hayes made it 3-0 for the Sharks just under three minutes into the third. After Hutchinson made a great save on Chad Rau, Hayes scooped up the rebound in front and made a quick move to stuff home his sixth of the season
The IceCaps cut the deficit to two at 8:50, however, on a redirected goal from Riley. Zach Redmond fired a shot from the top of the circle, and Riley tipped it glove side past Grosenick to make it 3-1.
Then, at 14:50, Mouillierat got the IceCaps to within one. After Grosenick made the stop on Carl Klingberg, Mouillierat pounced on the loose disc and shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-2.
While the IceCaps piled on the pressure in the final moments with Hutchinson pulled for the extra attacker, DaSilva wired home the insurance marker into the empty net with 22 seconds to play to secure the series split.
The IceCaps now break for the AHL All-Star Classic, which takes place Tuesday and Wednesday at Mile One Centre, before kicking off a six-game road trip against the Providence Bruins next Friday (8:35 PM NT).
