Falcons Drop Sunday Matinee in Providence

Providence, RI - The Springfield Falcons (31-13-1-4) were defeated by the Providence Bruins by the final score of 3-1 Sunday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center, halting the team's winning streak at three games.

Providence forward Tyler Randell scored the game-winning goal at 16:47 of the second period, regaining the lead for the Bruins, 2-1. For Randell, the goal was his second of the season. Mike Moore and Alexander Khokhlachev also found the back of the net for Providence.

Alex Aleardi scored the lone Springfield goal of the game, beating Bruins netminder Niklas Svedberg at the 10:52 mark of the second period to tie the game at 1-1. For Aleardi, it was his seventh goal of the season, second in as many days and third in the team's last four games. The Farmington Hills, Michigan native was assisted on the goal by forward Tim Miller and defenseman Tim Erixon, who appeared in his first game with the team since being returned on loan by the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday.

Jeremy Smith made 17 saves on 20 shots in net for the Falcons, falling to 17-9-3 this season. Svedberg stopped 26 of 27 shots for Providence, earning his 18th win of the 2013-14 campaign.

Neither team converted on the power play. Springfield went 0-for-3 with the man advantage, while Providence went 0-for-6.

The Falcons enter the AHL All-Star break atop the Northeast Division with 67 points, 10 points ahead of the second-place Albany Devils. Springfield will be represented at the All-Star Classic by defensemen Cody Goloubef and Frederic St. Denis.

The Falcons return to action at the MassMutual Center Friday, February 14 to host the Hartford Wolf Pack at 7:00 p.m. The team also plays at home Saturday, February 15 at 7:00 p.m. versus the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. versus the Worcester Sharks.
